Any of you guys trade lately? I've got a 99 sport club loaded with 26000 miles and cant get 10 grand in trade. Even traveled 5 hrs away to get away from this city hoping it would make a difference. Love my Dak but they sure dont hold much value. Have it for sale on Autoweb but havent had 1 email and its one of the cheaper ones on there.

GT no matter with way you cut it you almost never get more than ACV (actual cash value) which equates to wholesale value for your trade. A car dealer dosen't have to pay you more than wholesale value for your trade when he can go to auction and buy the same vehicle wholesale.
Now that being said a dealer may offer you more than ACV for your trade but he will just jack up the price of the new vehicle to make up the difference. The best way to trade in a vehicle is to go and make the best possible deal on the new vehicle first. Once you know you have there lowest price on the new vehicle then and only then let them know you have a trade. That way you find out what your vehicle is really worth wholesale and you really can't expect too much more. your best bet

is usually to sell outright you will get more for your vehicle that way then go buy the new one at that rock bottom price.

I got a quote for my 98 cc with 50k miles about a month ago. 8800, and that is with a v6, 5sp, air, wheels, and fog lamps as the only options. Get another quote, you should be able to get 10 grand.

You need to find out what the vehicle's trade-in value is really worth before going into a dealership. It is best to be firm on how much you want for your trade-in... if they won't do, tell them thanks for their time and walk-out...chances are they will try to compromise...let them try, but don't budge on the trade-in...eventually they will either give-up or give-in...

IT is also good to know exactly what you want to buy, and to know what the dealer invoice is on it... I'd pay no more than dealer invoice for a vehicle... the dealership should only make from $100-$500 profit per vehicle... they have a dealer holdback of 3-5% of the msrp from the dealer invoice price...

Ex.: $18,000 msrp vehicle, $15,500 dealer invoice, 3% holdback, actual $ amount the dealer has in the vehicle $14,960... add $250 (profit for them), so it comes to $15210 before taxes...that is how much you should be willing to pay for that vehicle...

I did this when I bought my Dakota...

E-mail me if you want any more info...

If you sell outright, make sure you would sell it for enough to make of the sales tax you lose on the trade in. Ex, a 10,000 trade-in will save you 700 in taxes if sales tax is 7%. Make sure you can sell the truck outright for at least 10,700, maybe even more to make up the extra costs of selling outright such as advertisement and personal hassels (washing, cleaning, trying to sell it to someone).

DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE YOU TRY TO MAKE A DEAL. SEARCH THE INTERNET FOR TRUCKS SIMILAR TO YOURS THAT ARE FOR SALE AT DEALERSHIPS AND PRINT THEM OUT. TAKE ALL THIS WITH YOU AND BE PREPARED TO HAGGLE. I SEARCHED THE NET FOR 2 WEEKS BEFORE I TRADED IN MY '99 CLUB CAB FOR MY QUAD CAB. I WAS TRADING IN A '99 CLUB CAB WITH A 2.5 AND 32,000 MILES AND AL SMITH IN RALEIGH, NC OFFERED ME $11,500 PLUS WAS WILLING TO SELL ME A QUAD CAB FOR INVOICE MINUS REBATE AND WOULD FIND LOCATE ME ONE IF THEY DID NOT HAVE IT ON THEIR LOT. I THEN WENT TO CHRIS LEITH IN WAKE FOREST,NC. AND THEY WERE ONLY WILLING TO GIVE ME $9,500. I THEN ASKED FOR THE SALES MANAGER AND SHOWED HIM PRINT OUTS I GOT FROM THE NET AND SHOWED HIM I WAS AWARE OF WHAT I COULD GET FOR MY TRADE. I JUST HAPPENED TO HAVE A PRINTOUT FROM AN IDENTICAL TRUCK THAT THEY HAD SOLD FOR $13,998. THEY ARE A NO HAGGLE DEALERSHIP, BUT SOME HOW THEY MANAGED TO CHANGE THEIR MIND AND GAVE ME $13,198 FOR MY TRADE. NOT BAD FOR A 2.5. I CREDIT MOST OF MY KNOWLEDGE GOING INTO THIS SALE TO WWW.CARBUYINGTIPS.COM.

Thanks for the info guys but pretty well had all the bases covered, did the homework etc. Comes right down to what mig-29 said. They dont have to give it to ya if they are pickin em up at auction for dirt. We have got a huge dealer only auction here in town that dealers from several states visit every week and my guess is they are gettin trucks super cheap but they sure demand a high price on the lot. Even armed with the pricing of vehicles on their own lot hasnt helped me. I dont mind a guy making some money, thats what makes the world go,but man offering 10g for a truck and then putting on their lot at 17g is getting pretty greedy. Oh well, enough of the rant. Thanks again for the input. GT

I was in pretty much the same boat but was trying to trade in a Jeep Grand Cherokee to get an Dakota. I ended up selling the Jeep myself just by cleaning it up and parking it in front of the post office with a sign. It looked really nice in black and gold and I got a bunch of calls, and sold it for $2000 more then the best trade in offer I had, in a matter of a few weeks. This way I could figure a no-trade $300 over invoice deal on a Dakota. Low and behold I ended up getting a used Dakota but that saved even more. The dealers will admit they make much more money on the used cars then they do the new, I'd hate to know how little they gave the guy who traded in my R/T. Try an ad in your local paper for $2000 over the best dealer offer, I bet it's worth it.
