Subject: Gen II drop questions / pinion angle? IP: Logged
Message: What i've got: 92 dak sport, reg cab, short bed.
quest 1: what is the best brand for lowering a gen II? and why isnt Belltech mentioned more in this forum?
quest 2: i'm thinking of droping it 2/3 or 2/4, so i'm wondering which will sit level? i can't go out and measure right now cause the body is off the frame.
quest 3: what about pinion angle? i'm putting in a 8 3/4 rear so i need to cut and weld the spring perches anyway and adjust pinion angle, so how does lowering affect pinion angle?
thanks.

Message: If you modify the position of the rear-end, I would retain the stock pinion angle. Unless you want driveline problems, you need to keep the pinion-to-driveshaft angle the same as the tranny output shaft-to-driveshaft angle.
Many "backyard" mechanics rotate their rearend up when they lift their trucks real high. This destroys u-joints and causes bad vibrations. Lowering your truck has the same issues.
The reason for retaining the same angle is because the driveshaft changes rotation speed throughout its rotation when there is a bend at the u-joint. When the angles at each end of the driveshaft match, the driveshaft alone changes rotational speed during each rotation. If the angles do not match, the driveshaft... along with the pinion and/or tranny output shaft "asborb" this rotational different. This is really hard on things... and causes a lot of vibration. Obviously, the more extreme angle(s) differences, the worse off you are. The lesser extreme angle(s) differences, the better off you are.
To make a long story short, keep the same angle.
Also, before people chime in and discuss CV joints... they work differently. CV joint (Constant Velocity) got their name because of this very subject. They velocity, or speed, is constant (does not change).

Message: pinion angle must must be almost parallel to
the angle of the output shaft of the trans..
within 5 degrees but not perfect..There are angle
guages to measure your driveline angles...

Message: I know this is an old post but if you're still out there Dak Yoda, I'm curious what you ended up with. I'm looking at a similar setup on my '95.
