Subject: Help! Transmission trouble!!! IP: Logged
Message: I already posted this on the V6 board, sorry, I wanted the most coverage possible;)...
Alright guys, I thought I'd post here and see if I can do something instead of taking it to a mech or stealership. I own a '91 V6 3.9L automatic tranny Dakota. Often times in the colder months, the engine will bog down while idling (idles at 600 normally). I used some fuel injector cleaner in the gas, and it got rid of part of the problem. Now however, when I'm braking to a stop, the engine will bog down (the rpm's drop and the truck "trembles"). It's exactly as if I were driving a manual, and I didn't downshift or pull in the clutch. The engine will bog down, normally to about 100 or 200 rpm, then it will either return to 600 (downshift?) and idle fine, or it will die completley. Recently, it has been just spending alot more time bogging down at a complete stop. ie: I'll come to a stop, the engine rpm's will drop to about 150, but they will stay at 150 for a couple of seconds, instead of going back up to 600 and idling fine. The main reason I think it's downshifting, is because it happens about 2 or 3 times while braking to a complete stop from a decent speed (once for each gear it downshifts), but the worse one is ALWAYS from about 10mph to a complete stop. Recently, the truck died completeley, and I had a bit of trouble starting it again. Before, It would restart just fine, and idle a bit higher (1K-1500) for a second or two when it was restarted. This problem doesn't happen every time I stop, but it does happen most of the time, and it seems to go away when warmer, dryer weather arrives. Lastly, the transmission fluid is at the correct level, the plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor are looking good. Guys, I need your help trying to get this fixed, please reply with any suggestions, and ask me if you need any more info. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Message: ok,when you stop, put transmission in neutral at aprox.15 mph.if engine doesn't die and problem doesn't existe, change lock-up selenoid in transmission.

Message: Just about posotive that trans isn't a lock up. Inspect fluid level and condition. If it smells burnt then have it changed and the bands adjusted.

Message: Hope this isn't related to what I had happen a few weeks ago on my 94': when I would shift from reverse to forward the truck would stall out unless I let it idle in neutral for a second. It would also stall if i blipped the throttle at idle and let off as well as not downshifting to first at a complete stop. I ended up taking it to a trans shop and had to have a whole new unit put in. From what I was told by the shop owner the valve body could have been cracked and it was letting fluid through to lock up the torque converter. This was all told to me before the pan was taken off and after a test dirve. Unfortunatly when the pan was removed there were chunks of gears sloshing around with burnt fluid. I had just over 84k miles on it when it went.

Message: change the fluid , and the filter NOW . Also make sure you are checking the fluid level as per
the manual . Low Fluid will do exactly what you are discribing . These trannys need a lot of TLC and old fluid and a plugged filter will kill them for sure .
