Subject: Had my Dakota Stolen!!

Message:
Had my 1997 Dakota for over 5 years and took extreme good care of it and it was one of a kind in town. I had owned a 1995 previous.
On Jan 5, I parked it in front of my door at 10:30 pm Friday, by Saturday 6:00 am it was gone. I was in shock at first, but the next day I was furious!! On the day my insurance was going to settle with me, the cops phone me that they have located my dakota. It was found in St. Paul Alberta Canada (I live in Edmonton and it is a four hour drive from here). It was in a field with six other cars and mine was stripped and damaged.
This is what I had stolen:
1-Lund visor
2-Lund Racerback
3-Tailgate with the Lund backdraft wing spoiler
4-Lund roll pan damaged
5-Sport model front bumper (mine was not a sport model)
6-Lund wiper cowl (they even stole the cheap wiper blades!!)
7-fifteen inch progressive rims 1000 cnd dollars
8-bf goodrich tires 700 dollars
9-Alpine amp 1000 dollars
10-custom sub box
11-door speakers
Now you can see why I was very angry!!!
On February the first, my insurance phoned me to say that the vehicle was going to be a right off (which I was glad because I didn't know if there was engine damage from them probably driving all the way there in third gear at 70 miles an hour!!)
This does have an happy ending though. On Saturday I purchased a 2002 Dakot SXT extended cab and I absolutely love it!!

OMG. Good thing you had a happy ending! I would be in shock too! I have to park on the street in front of my house, and that is a big fear of mine. Good luck with your new Dak.

Oh man. Glad everything worked out in the end.

This reminds me of my older sister's friend, who got his Mustang stolen in a parking lot at a local community college in broad daylight. And he's a cop himself.

Did you have any car security alarm installed in your 97 Dakota?

Wow. I was 'debating' whether or not to get a security system installed. I'm not debating anymore. Thank God it had a happy ending, congrats on your new Dakota. I have a 2002 SLT, and I love it as well. :-)

Glad to hear of the happy ending, now you have a brand new Truck. Make sure you install alarms,if not one from factory,, ignition kill and glass breakage sensors are nice, and I also use the Club,on the steering wheel to slow em down if they try.

By far the best antitheft is the factory SKIM key (Sentry Key Imobilizer Modual). You have to have a key that is programed to the modual or it won't start, period.

Fortunately, I have the sentry system in my new truck.
I have done the protection package and will be purchasing the club for visual security.

Ok, you got me worried now, I'm gonna be in Edmonton for a week and will have to park my dak on the street.
Glad to hear you got a new one out of it, my brother had the same thing happen but they fixed his and he started to have tranny problems a couple months later.

CW, how much is a system like that worth, or does it apply to the newer daks only?

I believe the Dealer can install the sentry system, but dont quote me on it, if they can would be spendy, you could have a similar system installed at a stereo place, with ignition kill.

It is a factory installed item for the newer Daks. It interfaces with the PCM to tell it weather to start or not. The dealer might be able to put it in a new one but I think I would be a major hassle. But I doubt it could be done.

Thanks, that is kinda what I was thinking. It sounds like something that would involve the pcm.
Maybe I can get a rottweiler to live in my dak ;)

That's sad, but its good that there is a happy ending.

I have a Viper Alarm system on my old Dak. I don't fear anyone stealing my dak, but its the things in it like Stero, CB, Cell phone, Radar Detector, etc.

hey CW if they get under the hood first and know a littlebit about truck wires it can be VERY easily bypassed.

My 1995 Dakota was stolen three days ago!!!! I am so mad. I have looked and looked. I was delivering pizza and when I turned around it was gone! I don't know how you handled it,but I feel like I'm just going to get screwed. Does anyone have any advice? I feel helpless, and my poor truck is probably gone!!!

But in all honesty johnny who is gonna take the time to pop the hood.. find the right wires.. bypass them then get back in and start up and drive away.. im pretty sure they would have better luck of just going and finding another vehicle...

First SKIS cannot be bypassed. The CTM polls the SKIS module and asks if the key transponder code is correct. If it is not or is not present the CTM tells the PCM to shut her down. The thief would need a DRBIII to disable the VTSS in order to steal the truck.

However, I do know people who have had their trucks stolen and still had SKIS.

I have EVSII and SKIS on my truck. The EVSII has an ignition cutout. The theif can poke around under the hood all they want but by the time they figure out what to do their skull would already be split in two by the Big Bertha driver I keep handy at the fron door. ;)
