Subject: Anybody experience this before IP: Logged
Message: I have a 5.2 98 cc automatic 48,000 miles. This has happened a few times. When I floor it or under 3/4 throttle the transmission slips between 1st and 2nd. It did it last night. It went to shift to 2nd but wouldn't it felt like it went into nutruel. My engine was bouncing off the rev limiter and back down. After I released the gas it shifted into 2nd. Any ideas?? I am going to get a shift kit put in the next 2 weeks, would this solve the problem. Could it be the transmission fluid?? I changed it myself about 8 months ago with the recommended tranny fluid. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Message: My friend has a 96 Jeep Grand Cherokee and he also had the 5.2L. I am assuming you guys have the same transmission. His did that same thing during hard acceleration. I believe this happened to him around 55,000 miles. He took it in and it cost him about $1,000 give or take a couple hundred. I think it may be the valvebody or something along those lines. Sorry for the bad news.

Message: Have you serviced the tranny? It should be done every 30k miles. My 98 5.2 would stick in second and after a flush and filter change, its as good as new.
Make sure your fluid is not low, that will make it slip like crazy.

Message: I used a 1/4 inch spacer that's made up of double back tape and a thin metal strip. It's located on the passengers side of the throttle body on the back side where the blades shaft or arm meets the body. This is the flat area that stops the blades from opening any further. By doing this the blades still open 99% or 100% vs 100 or 101%. For some reason the line was getting pulled just far enough for the tranny not to shift. Doing this solved my problem after trying lots of other things.

Message: I think I know your problem I had it a while back and what it is is the TV cable, it is located on the trottle body and runs to the tranny. it needs to be adjusted a littlebit and it will be fine but more than likly its not your tranny, you just have to adjust that cable, if there is a autozone in your area go buy the book on your truck and it shows you how to fix it, its easy to do, good luck

Message: I tried adjusting the cable. The only way I could get it to shift right was adjusting the cable forward so much that it bogged the engine down due to the converter being locked an never wanting to down shift. That's before I used the small spacer.

Message: I had the same symptoms awhile back after putting in the wrong Tranny fluid. Got some of the corrective Chrysler additive and fixed the problem.
As Rascal said, I'd bet a fluid/filter change would make her purr again..

Message: As long as you have it going well, I would not sweat it. These trannys are expensive so I am deliberate about the fluid changes. Good luck,

Message: Well took it in and had the shift kit put in. They fixed the problem also. There was too much line pressure going through the valve body between 1st and 2nd gear. There is an adjustment on the valvebody to decrease or increase line pressure. He simple backed the pressure down.It shifts perfect everytime. The shift kit helps as well, firmer shifts and better engagements.
