Subject: How big is my gas tank? IP: Logged
Message: I have a '02 cc 3.9l V6 and the sticker on the window said I have a 22 gal. gas tank. When I drive till the warning light comes on (1/8 tank left) and fill up, my truck only takes 16 gal. Does anyone know how big my tank really is? Also if it is 22 gal. Then why does the light come on with about 6 gal left?

Message: I have a 22 gallon tank too and it does the same thing. My guess is that they just give you an early warning.

Message: Midway through the 01 model year they switched from a 22 gallon to a 20 gallon. Dodge can't tell me why. It was even mentioned in the 01 brochure. Personally I'd rather have the 24 gallon from the quad.

Message: I don't know where dodge 2 time got his info but the dakotas only have 2 sizes of gas tanks. 22 gals for all models except the quad cabs which are 24 gals. The fuel light is supposed to come on when there is about an eight of a tank left. Other posts on this site have said that there is a hold back of about 2 gallons to prevent the fuel filter and other parts from damage. I have had 6 dakotas and they all have the light appear a little early. I always use 2 methods to determine how much gas I have left. The fuel light and my overhead computer that states my cumulative fuel economy between fill ups. Btw my window sticker says 22 gallons. 2002 model year. My 99 was also 22 gallons.

Message: I got my info straight from the 01 brochure. It was listed under the tank size of 22 gallions with a footnote indicating that mid year change to 20 gallions. If I had a scanner I would scan it and post it but I ain't got one. Find an 01 brochure and read the fine print yourself.

Message: I have an '02 also. Today the low fuel warning light came on and I went about 5 miles down the road. Filled it up and it only took 17.5 gallons. Maybe there's a big reserve, although I doubt it.

Message: I don't usually fill my truck up until the gauge is on E. The light is just a preliminary thing. I usally can put 18.5+ gallons in. With a 2 gallon reserve for the pump I am almost out when I fill up. I think the tank shrinks in the cold weather. On my 92 I ran it to empty and it only took a little more than 21 gallons.
Dakota 2 Time, Since I don't have a 2001 brochure or truck I will take your word for it. However it seems silly for dodge to drop to a 20 gallon tank mid way through the 2001 model year and return to the 22 gallon for 2002. Maybe the 20 gallon is for a base model? To replace the old 15 gallon tank that used to come standard?

Message: What might have happened in 01 is the supplier of the tanks messed up and made several lots a little small. Knowing how cheap Dalmier is they probably bought them at a discount and used them up. Dodge never could give me a straight answer to my inquiry about the tank. (Just like they gave stupid reasons for deleting the hood insulation and the under hood light)
Since I have a 97 and an 01 I can tell you when each reach "E" the 01 takes a few gallons less to fill up.
BTW, back in 97, 22 gallon was an option, the standard tank was 11 gallons.

Message: I used to drive an over-the-road big truck with twin tanks that were marked at 150 gal. capacity. The company I was driving for had just been audited by the DOT and they were very strict with their records,- logbooks, fueling, etc. You had to log your fuel stops at the precise time you fueled or else you didn't get paid. So you had to max out your milage between fueling, usually about 2000 miles give or take, depends on how long you're idleing. Well I ran that Century Class Freightliner into our yard up in Eagan, MN and ran it so low on fuel that it shut down just as I eased into the fuel island. I topped both tanks off and all I could put in was a little over 275 gallons. Ever since then I don't place too much stock in manufacturer's fuel capacity markings.

Message: to tell the difference between 15 and 22 gallon all you have to do is look at them from underneath. the 22 is longer and will sit further forward than the 15 gallon tank will. here is a picture of the 15 and 22 gallon tanks. the larger one is the 22 gallon. the 15 gallon is froma 88 the 22 gallon is from a 92 or 93. http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j183/forman1/fordification%20pics/DCP_0001_0081.jpg

Message: 22 gallons is advertised. However, most cars have a preload on the gas gauge. Its usually set for 3 gallons. This means that when you're needle is on the red, there is approximately 3 gallons left in the tank. This is to protect the fuel systems components and more importantly, to prevent people from running out of gas.
