Here is a repost of a thread of mine on the v6 board, i thought it might reach more people here so i reposted it, here is my original messege, thanks a lot for any more help guys and gals:

1988 3.9L 5spd 4x4

I've searched the archives pretty thoroughly and I haven’t really seen any concrete answers, accept for “they all do that.” I’m sure they do to some degree, but I think mine is worse then the ones mentioned in the archives. If I get on the gas, or let off, in pretty much any gear, there is a very pronounced clunk you can hear and feel quite well. When I have it in four-wheel it does not do it. Is it true “do they all do this,” I find it hard to believe because it makes every-day driving rather cumbersome… My first thought is the u-joints in the drive shaft, but I haven’t gotten around to check them yet, what is the best/easiest way to do so? Also, what other things could it be, what else should I check out? I really appreciate any suggestion or comments, thanks a lot.

Put it in nutral, BLOCK the wheels and twist the drive shaft and see if there is play between the cups and the cross of the U-joint.
