I searched the archives on Overdrive but I'm still clueless. When should I only turn off the O/D? Or better yet, what is the O/D really for? So far, I have the O/D on when I'm on the highway and in traffic.

I read somewhere in the owner manual that it is wise to turn the O/D off when going uphill at an elevation of 2000 feet or more. I mention this because when I was driving my new truck home from the dealer in LA, I had to drive over the mountain (4000 feet elevation) and noticed the truck was barely going.

Thanks in advance.

Tim

Turn off the overdrive when going up hill, or towing a trailer.
Overdrive allows the engine rpms to be lower while you are cruising. It helps on gas mileage.

leave it off if your in the city too, I'm talking like 35 mph stoplight every mile, someone slowing down in front of you every 1/4 mile to turn.
If you keep the tranny from kicking in and out of overdrive you'll make it last longer

I have found that on my 2001 3.9L CC, that it helps me to shut off the O/D when I am getting on the interstate. It helps me accelerate faster by not letting the transmission shift. By having the O/D off I get further into the power band of the engine with the higher RPMs. Just my two cents.

I do what Bill does...also do it when I'm in a race in my R/T. :)
