Subject: NEVER AGAIN IP: Logged
Message: First off, Thanks to the individuals that helped me with some of the issues. It was appreciated!
List of issues I had with my 98 dakota 59,000 mi.
4x4 sport 5.2 AT in the order of when they went bad.
4x4 Linkage. 18,000 miles
PCM module.27,000 miles
Fuel pump 31,000 miles
Front bearings. 31,000 miles
PCM module.39,000 miles
windshield wiper motor died. 41,000
Tranny needed replaced/rebuilt. 44,000 miles
Alternator 46,000 miles
Starter. 51,000
PCM module again 57000 miles
I'll be turning over 59,000 miles.
Again my tranny went bad. My gas guage does not work. And now I have a bad hesitation and The mechanics are blaming the injectors.
I did every recomended service for this truck.
I run 89 or higher octane. The truck shines. Under the hood as well as on the shell.
I do mostly daily driving with occasional towing. I LOVED THE DAKOTA!! It was my showpeice But, it failed miserably in reliability. It let me down WAY to many times.
MY DAKOTA IS FOR SALE!!
My warranty ran out at 36,000.
I spent 4400 in out of warranty work.
And the problems keep arriving!
Those who love there dakotas!! More props to you!!
Your making more money for upkeep than me!
I honestly Do not feel this truck is worth the money. I also have a 93 Chevy full size. Nothing fancy, Nothing pretty, Kinda boring truck.
I hate to say it.
I only had the battery and Alternator go.
And im on 94,000 miles on it. This chevy is Towing 6000lbs + every weekend, I go offroading and do the recomended services on this truck as well. I beat this 93. IT WOn"T DIE, NEVER let me down.
Nothing worse than having your PCM module fail Midstate nevada. 48 miles of desert in either direction. 15 hours later somebody decides to stop.
Sorry to vent. My misfortune. DAKOTA IS GONE!!
Thanks again To all that helped with this lemon in the past. Never again will I own a dodge.

Message: You must burry that thing in the mud because I never replace starters or alternators doesn't matter about milage. I would also say alot of that has to do with the dealer you take it to. 3 PCMs, they are not fixing the problem. Get a real dealer that doen't just trow parts at it hoping that it will fix it.

Its never let me down but it sure is ugly :)

Message: I have a 98 SLT 5.2 2wd Dak with 70,300 miles.
I have never towed anything with it though it has the towing package.
I have had the trans service by the dealer at 60,000 miles, it would stick in second gear before, not after that service. I also had the differential serviced at that time.
I have added a homebrew K&N, a Black Magic 150, 180 T-stat, Edelbrock shocks, PIAAs and Hella lights on the brushguard. I also added side steps.
I did replace the throttle positions sensor as it would surge slightly when on cruise..that repaired it, and I had a loud creaking noise that turned out to be a loose nut on the A frame. That is all the problems I have had and it runs like a champ. The truck belonged to my brother-in-law in Texas but he passed away last May. My sister gave me the truck and in July I drove it from Houston to Atlanta and did have that annoying abs light come on once when I had a bump at a bridge on the Interstate..never saw it again.
I change the oil and the usual stuff, but give it average treatment, about as good as my 57 Harley.
I read these pages and it seems that the guys with 4 wheel drive have a lot more problems than me so I am glad I don't have the extra drivetrain, but I don't need it either, I never take mine off road.
Its too bad your truck gave you problems, I would have dumped it long before you did, but this is my first Dakota and I plan to keep this one until the second year V10 Ram comes out at which point I will trade it in for that monster. (I never buy the first year of a new design..).
Best of luck to you,
Rascal

chevy reliablity HAHAHA!! the newer ones are a joke (and so are the older ones im my book) go to chevytalk.com and go under 99 and up silverados. everyother post has something to do with "this is broke" or "dealer says my engine knock is normal" WHAT A PICE OF CRAP.
on all of the dodge forums (this included) you might have a couple of posts on broken things (mostly from gen I trucks), but most of the posts are
"im running 10# of boost with a 40 shot for over a year with no problems", and "which cam should i get" ect..

Message: Yeah, I gotta agree about that 'Chevy reliability.' I traded my 2K S-10 in on the Dakota because at 40K miles, the brakes had gone, the clutch was going (and I'm NOT a heavy shifter), and the engine itself was starting to behave strangely.

Message: I've put 2 friggin starters and 3 batterys in my Dak, and no one cabn figure out what the hell the prob is. I have put way too much $ into my truck. It is a first class pice of $hit.
But I love it anyway, It's payed for, and fixing the POS Dodge is still cheaper than a new truck payment.
besides, theyre the best looking trucks on the road, and I'ts better to look good than run good!!

Message: Well, cause I think once the alternator goes out i'll have just about everything replaced :-}
Besides, for some reason, problems and all, i just love that damn truck. the body is in terrific shape. Good paint , no dents, and i dont feel like a new truck payment.
If i have to put a few hundred $ a month into the Dak, then I'll look into a new truck.
I would'nt even know which one to start looking at to replace it. Maybe a Dodge, more likely a Tundra. Even more likely a new motor for the Dak.
dont want no ugly ass small truck!

Message: It seems to me there is an awful lot of Generalizing going on on both sides of this heated debate.
Some Trucks were made by different crews than others, some were made after a QC guys Father or Mother died, and some were made by the best crew to ever work on that line. Unfortunately you never know till you get it and by then it's too late unless it waranteed. So if you like the Truck buy another one. If you don't think you can live with another one then bite the bullet and go Brand X. Just don't suffer and stew cause that my friend is the path to Self-destruction.
I wish you luck.

At 97k miles I gave it to my son. Replaced batteries when needed. I hope my new Dodge even comes close to my past experience with these 2 GM trucks.
NOTE: The Dakota is a hell of lot more truck..!

Message: Had my Dak for 31,000 miles. The only thing acting up are the brakes. The pads are grooving the rotors. They are still safe though and I got a good deal on some after market replacements (rotors and pads). They are still waiting in the box for when I get fed up with the current brakes. Other than that i've been very satisfied with the truck. It pulls like a champ and hauls ass. Oh and the front ball joints that squeek. At least thats what I think they are.

Message: I think that if you are responsible for someones safety in building a vehicle, you should have the common sense to take the day off if you dont feel like doing youre job correctly.
we all have bad days, and everyone has thier own little personal tragedys, but I dont buy this crap about the someone having a bad day so lets just build a crappy truck today.
When youre not in the mood to do youre job right, then stay home. I'm sure plenty of other people would love the opportunity to do the job right.
Lord knows I have "bad" days, but if I let it out on my job then people die.
It's all about having the discipline to do it right and take pride in youre creation. And thats something that American workers could use a lot more of. PRIDE, and DISCIPLINE.
Oh, and If you beleive in the bad day philosophy, then my Dakota must have been built on a Wednesday, cause I'ts been a great truck. and we all know no one has any problems on wednesdays :-}

Message: I hear you Chris.
I'm not saying that they consciously made the truck badly. I'm just suggesting that sometimes a unit can be a lemon due to circumstances beyond our control. People have tough things happen to them and don't even realize how it affects thier work, they think their doing the job as good as they ever did.
I just don't like the generaliztions. I like my GEN III and like you have had no problems with it at all. Must have also been made midweek. 8-)

Message: Its not from "bad assembly crews" putting a certain truck together. Its call "design flaws". So many of these trucks have the exact same problems that it can't be just from bad workmanship.Poor workmanship usually shows up as a bolt not tightened or missing or a crappy paint job. Things such as spark knock and stalling are more an issue of the fundamental design of the vehicle. Point your fingers at where ever the engineers design new dodges. And the suppliers where they get crap parts from (i.e. ball joints, trans. parts, etc.) If only my dakota ran as good as it looked...... :C(

Message: Well my 98 does run as good as it looks, despite my abnormal service intervals. So where are my Design Flaws?
Seems like a pretty pessimistic outlook "Anything that goes wrong is a design flaw because you've heard about it from so many people. I guess all the rest of us who enjoy our trucks problem free are just lucky."
You look at life the way you need to.
I ain't mad at'cha just trying to keep a positve outlook.
