Subject: Coolant flush IP: Logged
Message: It seems like I have a billion things to do now that I have passed 30K miles...Anyway, besides everything else (tuneup, trani oil change), I figure I should flush/change coolant. Can anyone give me some step-by-step instructions on how to go about this? Sometimes I feel like I am asking you folks to do my homework for me :-), so my apologies for posting this question.
At the same time, thanks to all for your help. In my opinion, this is perhaps these Dodgedakota forums are the best I have ever been a part of on the Internet.

Message: What year is your truck? The newer ones have the 5 year coolant. It is not green. It is a pink/ red color.

Message: ok. Well if your coolant is green then it needs to be changed. There are kits in the autoparts stores that can help you flush out your system. I think that you can use a garden hose also. What I do is spend the $40-50 dollars and have the dealer do it.

Message: i did it with the kit from the store for a couple of bucks it was not that hard once i figured it out but that was only after i spilled some. You just need some garden hose, the kit and something where to put the old antifreeze, there was quite a bit in there and when flushing it i didn't want to let everything go all over the place. You first drain as much out of it which you can do out of the bottom of the radiator on my 97 its on the drivers side. Then take out the termostat, on the top of the motor at the end of the big cooling hose, well thats where it is on the 97 5.2. they tell you to take out the block drains but good luck my where rusted in solid so i didnt even bother. but after that you can conect into one ofthe lines going back on the passenger side pobley a heat line would work. if i remember right you'll have to cut the line but its not a problem, you see. Then hook the hose up and turn it on and let it flow out of the top of the radiator on the dirverside where you would conect the large hose. Run it for a while till it comes out clean. If i remember right you should then do this with the engine idling. and then drain out the water and fill it back up. remeber if you can't get the block drains out then you won't be able to drain everything and you won't us as much as you would excpect to. I used the non-toxic type so if i spill any next time i do it i won't have to be as worried about it going into the ground or a pet getting into it. It is a bit more expensive but works just as well. I've been running it for a while and have not had any problems. Also don't forget to used distiled water from the store not tap water or spring water they have to many minerals in them and your trying to flush the minerals out so don't jsut put them back in. Well for more info as your parts shop and i would look at the hayens manual for a more detailed instuctions. This might sound like a lot of work but it shouldn't take to long and it will save you some cash plus you will know that it is going to get done right.
