 Subject: Popping noise in stering colum

My dak has a popping noise when I turn the stering wheel and and it pops kinda loud, it never bothered me before but now everone is bringing it to my attention and I want to fix it.
I have a 98 SLT no cruse control, Please advise,

Has it always done this, even from the factory? I had a stereo installed the other week, and they ties some wires to the steering column with a plastic tie. It would tap something ever revolution...

Hey, My 98 SLT with cruise control does this. It has made the poping sounds ever since I bought it in 2000. I never cared enough to pay to have it fixed. If a quick fix exists that would be cool but I am not too worried.

It may be the clock spring. Does the horn work?

Ported 68mm throttle body, IAT adjuster, 3" flowmaster cat back, TPS @ .76V, 4" cold air, Roadmaster active suspention, Removed Third cat. Electric fan Convertion, Awaiting HO cams.
Working on adjustable fuel pressure with return.

This was a common problem on 98 Daks, it is a defect in the steering column mid shaft, and is a factory recall repair, check with your dealer.

Yeah...I heard something about that being a recall too. Something about it rubbed some sort of insulation off and the airbags wouldn't work. Just test your airbags and see if they work.
No, that was just my attempt at bringing some kind of comedy to everyone's breaking Dakotas.

I had the popping sound in my 99. Dealer replaced the whole steering column, vs. finding and fixing the problem. It was under warranty at the time, so this was the easiest way to get me in and out of the shop. - Jim

Well thanks, the horn dose work fine and I dont remember when it started but I will go to the dealer and ask if it was a recall that I missed or somthing, Like I said it never bothered me but now it is.
