Subject: Gas mileage IP: Logged
Message: I should count my lucky stars. I went to fill up 2 days ago, and I have a habit of resetting the miles/trip counter. The gas light had JUST come on, and according to multiple people, I have about another 3 to 4 gallons left at that point. This meant that I had gone about 330 miles on 18 gallons. That works out to about 18.3 MPG. Not too shabby, considering some of the posts I have read.

Message: Yeap... 5-speed with 3.55 gears? Mine has 5 gallons left (Quad Cab, 24 gal tank) on the light and get 18.9MPG average in the Sierra-Nevada foothills.
It increases by 2MPG if not using MTBE oxygenated gasoline.
I made 23.5MPG between Coos Bay, Oregon and Seattle, Washington.

Message: What does MTBE mean again? I forget. I'm at work and can't look it up. I just put an aftermarket muffler on and MPG increased by about 1 MPG. Soon an FIPK will be on there as well, and I am not a leadfoot, so it should increase by another 1 or 2 MPG. Not too bad. :-) And this gas mileage is WITH some stop-and-go in Norfolk, VA. Pleasantly surprised, I was.

Message: Doesn't keeping your truck bed covered improve the gas mileage somewhat? And by how much, if there are any posters here with similar experience.
So far, (400 miles), I've been getting an average of 14.9 mpg.

Message: Yep, keeping it covered does improve it. I haven't covered my truck (yet) but every one of my friends who has a truck has covered theirs; they've quoted anything from about .5 to 3 mpg. Right now I'm doing the next best thing - leaving the tailgate down when I drive. *L*

Message: MTBE (methyl tertiary-butyl ether)
I understand it pre-oxidizes the fuel, thereby reducing the effectiveness in producing energy. The reason for introducing it was to cool the combustion process reducing the NO (Nitrous Oxide, not to be confused with NO2, nitrous oxide)in the exhaust. NO breaks down in sunlight to produce Nitrogen (okay stuff) and ozone (okay in the stratosphere, not okay in Califronia city streets).

Message: Also available is a net that goes across the back in place of the tailgate. I have one & my mileage went up almost 3mpg. Whole lots cheaper than a bed cover also.. $22.95 incl tax.

Camper shell increases 4%
and somewhere Bernd posted a link a while ago about this. The SnugTOp TopGun shell should provide really good mileage with the slope on it.
