Subject: 98 speed limiter in new QC IP: Logged
Message: That's it I've had it! After hitting the limiter several times since I have owned this vehicle I have found several different reasons why I can not have it removed or raised. Ken Belle say's the reason is with the drive shaft or drive train that DC used some crappy drive shaft? others say tires i tend to believe the drive shaft. Which piss's me off, I was never informed about a limiter from the dealer or within Dodges own Brochour or advertising, sure they like to say they are magnum engines with all this hype about power but apparently it is all useless!
I am going to find a Lawyer and start a class action lawsuit since i was not informed that there was a limiter on this car when i bought it!

Message: I have 2 Daks myself, a 2k 4x2 and a new 2002 Quad cab 4x4 both have the 4.7, automatics, I love em both but i also hate the speed shut down at 97 Mph. SUCKS! But i learned to live with it. I strongly feel they used this shut down because of the tire rating is a S and = 112 mph Tops. The driveline is the same as on the Rt and it goes to 115 Mph I believe.I guess they figure also who wants to do 112 Mph in a 4x4 or a non sporty truck,, but i think they are wrong, I would like to see at least 110 Mph shut down..

Message: Good luck with the lawsuit. LOL The Lawers will have a feild day with that one. *but your honor the truck won't let me severly break the speed limit* HAHAhaha I can see it in DCs brochures now "Speed limiter set at 117mph for customer satisfaction". BTW there is a way around evertything.;)

Message: Count me in von dutch ! This is nothing but big Brother run amuck , If I wana go fast on my 600 acre ranch I should have that right! Get the goverment off my back! I dont buy the drive shaft story ,It looks built well enough to me.Look at some of these so called 4 wheele drives on the road ,I notice some of the driveline components look like they came off a RC.Noware as beefy as the Dakota`s.It`s the tire speed rating issue, and if thats the case ,It should be readily Raised ,should you buy higher speed rated tires. All the dealers claim they dont know how to raise or remove the limiter. It`s all a crock,I agree wholeheartly with you,If we do indeed have to live with it and its for our own good ,then why not tell us this UP FRONT,hell I`d bought a brand that can go as fast as the speedometer claims.Sincerley, jj

Message: kevster,
I have a 01 QC 4X4 5.9 auto Sport Plus and just for giggles since everyone complains, I thought I'd see if it shut down at 98. Went past 105mph and didn't show any signs of slowing down, I did though since tickets at that speed are pricey.

Message: jjj not all Dakotas shut down at 98,my CC 4.7 4X2 does shut down at 98,but the tires are speed rated at 107.{Go figure
].From what I read on this site, is that reg. cab's with 5spds{4.7} and 4x4{4.7} shut down about 110.I would think that tire rating is the key.In my opinion who cares,if a person was going to race his truck at the Drag strip,it should be good for low 13's with the limiter.
Any other opinions on my opinion is welcome.

Message: Von Dutch
I got my 01 Dakota last May,It's a strange one anyhoo I went so far as to file the lemon law because of the limiter and DC sent there Rep for the final inspection and he downloaded a program from DC to raise mt speed Limiter, was at 98mph now 120+,It's all done through the Control Antilock Brakes has to do with a code 10 and code 12,The reason Leach can remove the limiter is he wrote the program for DC,Stay on there butts!!!

Message: I would think the LT tires would have the lower speed setting since it is well known 4X4 LT tires and high speeds don't mixed too well. The manual says not to drive above 80mph for sustained periods with the Light Truck tires. So I thought my QC would be a 98 mphler.

Message: ASE boasts there chip being able to remove the limiter as well. Mines set at 117mph. I don't know when i'd ever go over that. But if a chip were available like ASE that does other things besides the limiter...i'd probably get one.
