I have noticed loud pops from the rear of my truck
when turning into sloped drives, and a loud
creaking from the front when turning and applying
the brakes at relatively low speed. Most of the
trucks I have driven in the past were fairly old
and did not make these sounds. Is this normal for
a new Dakota? Anyone experience this?

The popping noises coming from the back are from the bed hold-down bolts. There are TSB's on this depending on what year your Dakota is and the dealer will fix them at no cost to you. This is a very common problem.

I'm not sure what the front end noise could be. I do know that Dodge's lower ball joints are crap and non-greasable so it could be those.

I have the same problem with my 2000 QuadCab if you can send me a copy of the TSB that would be great Chuck. The dealer says they don't know what the problem is.

You can also go the DML homepage and do a search in the archives for "popping" in Jul-Dec 1999 and Jan-June 2000. There are a lot of posts with some good info here.

Same problem here, on the front at least. It was the intermediate shaft on the steering arm. Had to argue with 2 dealers to get it fixed. There is a TSB, but it is only for the 4x4 models. I got mine fixed, but it still does it, as does the wife's Ram. But I have learned to live with it. 44k miles later, it still works. Seems to do it at slow speeds, while hitting the brakes and turning, right? and if you turn, hit the brakes, stop and let off the brakes, it does it then right? I have an email explaining it all, somewhere, if I find it , I will send it to ya.

Hope this helps

I WOULD HAVE YOUR BALL JOINTS CHECKED OUT. DON'T HAVE THE DEALER DO IT. THEY'LL TELL YOU THAT THERE OKAY AND NOT TO WORRY. TWO AUTHORIZED DEALERS TOLD ME THIS, AND WHEN I TOOK IT TO ALIGNMENT SHOP. THEY TOLD ME, THAT ALL FOUR BALL JOINTS NEEDED REPLACING. I HAD THE WORK DONE, AND THE NOISE IS GONE. THE REPAIR BILL IS CLOSED TO $700 (INCLUDES PARTS AND LABOR). TRUST ME I FIGHT DODGE FOR REEMBURSEMENT OF THE COST. IT DOESN'T PAY TO HAVE A WARRANTY WHEN YOU PURCHASE A NEW VEHICLE. ALSO CHRYSLER CORP. DOESN'T TRAIN THERE AUTHORIZED DEALER MECHANIC'S TO SEE THIS PROBLEM, WHICH IS NO HELP TO THE CUSTOMER. I HOPE YOU HAVE BETTER LUCK.

I took my Dakota back to the dealer for It's first oil change.I had them to check it out and said It could have possibly come from rust while shipping. They greased the sway bar and told me to bring it back if problem wasn't fixed. My truck only pops when I turn left into driveways or sometimes rarely in left curves on highway.I have not heard the pop as much but still unsure if it is fixed.

Had the dealer look at the noise problem from the rear end or where ever it is coming from. Will find out more tomorrow (Monday) they agree there is something wrong and have checked the TSB's and say the fix will take five hours. They want the service manager to give the go ahead to fix the problem. More to come as I find out.......
