Subject: SQUEAKY BALL JOINT FIX?!!!!? IP: Logged
Message: Well, maybe it's temporary anyway. The left front ball joints on my 99 SLT ext-cab 4x2 were squeaking so bad I had to do something, and I didn't have any time to put into it. Plus, I'll replace the ball joints when I put the lowered a-arms on in the spring (cold here in Wisconsin). So, I used a very small nail and poked a tiny hole into the ball joint boot (what did I have to loose, right?). Then I stuck in the wand from a can of white lithium grease (spray can type) and gave each ball a good shot. The boot "puffed up" immediately, and white grease easily came out around the boot edges (says to me that the boot wasn't doing squat to seal out water). Also, because there is little volume in the boot, grease and propellant from the can will come out the tiny hole (watch your eyes, wear safety glasses). The squeak was gone immediately! I didn't even have to drive the truck, just pushed down on the bumper, no squeak. For now, THE SQUEAK IS GONE! And it hasn't returned for a month. I know this is a cheap a$$ way to do it, but it does buy me time until I can do the a-arm/suspension work myself.

Message: Thanx, good tip for us Dak men. also possibly could put a dab of silicone over small hole on boot to help seal it back up.

Message: Good point Kevster. I used a very small nail, to create as small a hole as possible. But a dab of silicone would be a good idea. It's been over a motnh now and no squeak! I also don't get the "clunk" when making a sharp turn, like into a driveway apron. So I'm guessing my ball joints are ok (for now). Makes me wonder if a lot of ball joints get replaced when it wasn't necessary (just to get rid of the squeak). Hopefully this lasts until spring.
