I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota Quad Cab, 4.7 V8. 18,000miles. Engine light came on and after suggestions by the service manager at the dealer, I filled the gas tank, tightened the lid 3 times, to see if light would go off. No, so made an apt. they said trk was OK, told me to try dry gas, but then I told them AutoZone put a code tester on it and found codes. They said, well...maybe will take another look...so they did, bad compression on #8 cylinder and more. Removed both heads, send to machine shop, I assume machined cylinders, and I don't have a clue what would cause this so soon, or what to do to prevent a repeat. Any input would be appreciated!

Hmm, I wonder if they know what they are doing or just tried to avoid the work. Low compression could be from something as simple as a bad valve spring. I'd be real cuiriose (sp) on wtf they are doing or thinking. You should call and ask them exactly what the problem is and what they are doing to address it.

Why would they try to avoid work. tis under warrnaty and dodge is paying. The dealer doenst really care if you want tohe work done. all they care is that someone pays
I think it was a simple service manager who tried to see if the CES light would go off if the gas cap was tightened. No biggie they are taking care of it. Sounds weird that 18K and the valve spring broke

Wierd, but not unheard of. Could have just been a defective valve spring. I mean, how many does Dodge use in a year? I'm sure they occasionally get ones that are 'iffy'. Glad they are taking care of it!

Rob, because Chrystler pays them less in labor for warranty work then regular work. There are other reasons as well that I will not go into.

Sounds like a blown head gasket on your #8 cylinder. If that is the case, the reason they send it to the machine shop is to have the heads trued again. Usually when you blow a head gasket on an aluminum head, the head will warp slightly at the point where it blew. If they just replaced the gasket without having the head trued, it would just blow in the same place again. They true it by milling a couple thousandths off of the gasket surface. I had done this many times back when I worked in a machine shop building engines.
