Hey guys,
Now don't get me wrong when I say this, I love my Dakota and wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. I was reading my new Motor Trend and they had the competition for the 02 Truck of the Year. The Dakota of course was not included as it is not the full size truck the others are. The Chevrolet Avalanche won. My father just bought an Avalanche, and although some think it is ugly, I really like the truck. The convertible midgate is awesome and works great. I would love to see Dodge put something like this into our Dakotas, it really makes for a versatile vehicle. Just thought I would pass this along in case people hadn't seen the article.

From when I've seen reviews on Edmunds and CarPoint(MSN) the Dakota always is number one, specially for a quad cab, Tacoma is usually a close second.

There was a post not too long ago about the Avalanche...I can say I think the majority of the forum loathe it. I have been thinking of going to a lot sometime and checkin' it out, I've just seen it on the road and in commericals. They seem to be doing ok, and do kinda stick out in traffic more than most other vehicles.

BTW, I hate the looks too.

Whats the plastic going to look like in 3 years worth of summer? Or what about 5 years? Thats my only beef, plastic will never last a long time. So 1/2 of the truck will more than likely look like crap when its 15-20 years old.

true, and I'm not defending the avalanche, but what's "rust" going to look like in 15~20 years?

When the Avalanche first came out I was really impressed. So I went and looked at one at the dealership. Once I recovered from the sticker shock ($38,0000) I went to looking around it. Ya, its got some nice doodads and little compartments all over the place, and the "transformer" thing was interesting. But, figured the compartments would get full of my junk, and the conversion thing.. well just don't see a whole lot of use for it. Waay to much plastic on it. And like everyone knows, eventually it will rust under it, warp or just fall off. Bought a quad instead. Glad I did!

I just saw the show the other night. I'm not saying the avalanche is not a good truck. But it's the same as the trucking magazine truck of the year in which the GMC denally won. Every truck tested except for the RAM had the most powerful engine available and was in an extend a cab or quad cab form. The Rams in both comparisons were the RC with the 4.7 and were around the 20 mark and every other truck was almost 40 or higher. I know I'm a little bias but I would like to see more equal testing. I know that GM has refused to allow there vehicles tested in some situations depending on the competition. I'm wondering if this is the case here? Trucking magazine did a lighting shoot out a while ago were GM refused to allow the Z06 to be run against the lighting. Let’s hope for our sake "the consumer” that these comparisons are done more equally.

Hey guys, I can understand each of your points. Although the price was a little more, it really seems like you get a lot for your money. I was absolutely shocked with the amount of space in the backseat. I am around 6' tall and I could sit back there for a trip across the country. With the Quad Cab dakota, you may get the rear seat, but you don't get very much bed. The avalanche (with rear seat folded down) can carry full 8' sheets of plywood or drywall and you don't have the wheel wells sticking up. Again, I love my Dakota and wouldn't get rid of it for an Avalanche, but the av. does have its share of advantages.

$38,000 for a Chevy? Was this particular Avalanche, buttugly M.F. truck, fully loaded?
I've seen at least 2 in the parking lot here at work. They don't look any better up close than far away and from what I could see the room and storage space inside isn't a lot different than a Dak CC.
That said, I like the midgate idea but I would NEVER buy a Chevy to get it.

web,
i have a 2001 CC and believe me, my father's avalanche has a hell of a lot more room than my truck. The back seat is absolutely huge and even with the midgate up you have over 5 feet of bed length. But hey, to each his own.

I wonder what GM is gonna do when the 14 yearold they hired to design their cars and trucks graduates high school and gets a real job?

Some of the ugliest new vehicles out on the road are now GM's. Has anyone seen the new Caddys?

I might forgive crappy styling if the vehicle is reliable, but ugly and a POS?

No F***ing way would I ever buy a GM product.

Maybe a Toyota;-} But NEVER GM

GM might start making better looking vehicles now that ex-Chrsyler man Bob Lutz is there. Chrysler made a big mistake when they chose Bob Eaton ove Bob Lutz to be Chairman. If they had Chrysler would still be Chrysler and not Dalmier-Chrysler. I think over the next few years GM will start to kick butt and Dodge will no longer be the truck trend leader it has been. Even though I do not like the Avalanch, at least it shows some forward thinking.

On behalf of our DAKs, I suppose there IS a price to be paid when they're in a "class" ALL by themselves... I honestly cannot understand the Avalanche commercial.. "an SUV that's also a pickup" (or vice-versa)- that's an oxymoron! I bought my QuadCab PRECISELY because it combined those two attributes WITHOUT any "compromise". Passengers are ALWAYS isolated from cargo and also separated by two fixed steel walls (bed & cab).

I agree with the previous comments about WAY too much plastic - and those "flat-top" wheel wells look like dung! (Ugly Aztek-design influence for sure!) Although I did read many reviews, I made my own choice - for my own reasons and bought my QC because I REALLY don't care WHAT anybody else thinks!

To be honest with the readers, I also think the magazines should mention when ANY manufacturer declines to participate in a "shoot-out"! Kinda' makes a prospective buyer think twice, right?

Grey,
I understand completely about what you are saying. My point earlier was that with the Avalanche, sure you can have the bed and cab separate and have lots of space in both. But the Avalanche gives you the OPTION of having a full size bed, something the QC does not. I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see Ford and DC come out with similar concepts in their trucks in years to come. Just my two cents.

Guys, My next door neighbor, got his Avalanche for $30K, and 0% interest, they were offering before the first on the year.

That's right, invoice, cash back, and 0% interest.

Bill, You're comparing back seat room of a CC to a full size avalanche? Pllleleeeaaasssseeee. Get Real, It's even got more room than the QC, but it should, it is fullsizer.

Did any of you pay over invoice for your truck, with the options you wanted?

Sticker may say 38K, but only uninformed pay it. 30K for his truck was a good deal.

Todd,
If you read all of the posts, then you are aware that I was responding to Webtiger's post that said the inside wasn't much different than a CC. I assume he meant a QC, but it was not me who said it. My father bought his Avalanche for slightly over 30 and got cash back and 0% financing.

Geez... I wonder how much GM had to pay MotorTrend to get them to come to THAT verdict?

Geez... like Momma said..."Don't go buyin' no UGLY truck!"

BTW, since it appeared to work, I guess next year's SUV winner will be the Pontiac Aztek... Hell, the Avalanche more or less looks like an Aztek with a bed on it... YUCK!!!!

I'm not worried about the plastic on my avalanch, because I will probably buy a new truck in the next two or three years.

In defence of the avalanch, this is the best driving truck I have ever owned. Everyone is talking sh*t on this truck, and they havent even driven the thing. It just sounds like ford and dodge bias pokes it nasty head up once again. If you are thinking of buying this truck, please go and drive one and you will understand why it got truck of the year. Dont listen to a bunch of chevy haters.
