CNN Headline News did a short news listing regarding Ford and GM's contributions to the relief and recovery efforts in New York and Washington. The findings are as follows .....
1. Ford-$1 million to American Red Cross matching employee contributions of the same number plus 10 Excersions to NY Fire Dept. The company also offered ER response team services and office space to displaced government employees.

2. GM-$1 million to American Red Cross matching employee contributions of the same number and a fleet of vans, suv's and trucks.

3. Daimler Chrysler-$10 million to support of the children and victims of the Sept. 11 attack.

4. Harley Davidson Motorcycles-$1 million and 30 new motorcycles to the New York Police Dept.

5. Volkswagen-Employees and management created a Sept. 11 Foundation, funded initial with $2 million, for the assistance of the children and victims of the WTC.

6. Hyundai-$300,000 to the American Red Cross.

7. Audi-Nothing.

8. BMW-Nothing.

9. Daewoo-Nothing.

10. Fiat-Nothing.

11. Honda-Nothing despite boasting of second best sales month ever in August 2001.

12. Isuzu-Nothing.

13. Misubishi-nothing.

14. Nissan-Nothing.

15. Porsche-Nothing. Press release with condolences via the Porsche website.

16. Subaru-Nothing.

17. Suzuki-Nothing.

18. Toyota-Nothing despite claims of high sales in July and August 2001. Condolences posted on the website.

I can only express hope that this infuriates and sickens each of you like it did me. Whenever the time may be for you to purchase or lease a new vehicle, keep this information in mind. I ask that you choose a product made by an American-owned and based company. Apart from Hyundai and Volkswagen, the foreign car companies contributed nothing at all to the citizens of the United States. It's OK for these companies to take money out of this country, but not acceptable to return some in a time of crisis.

Note: This was received on the internet, I have not verified this information myself.

i would rather buy an american truck even if it were inferior to keep money here, instead of japan or somewhere else! keep americans working, buy american for the next thing you buy might cost you your job!

usa love it or leave it!

I think it is sad that people don't realize that profits from sales of imports all goes back over seas. I understand that many Americans are employed by the import factories here in the US, but the real money from the product goes right back to Japan or whatever other country is involved. Do they allow us these same liberties in their countries? Not a chance! The consumers in Japan would by American in a second if given the choice. The Japanese government makes American products basically unaffordable with trade restrictions and tariffs. Please don't try to argue the point with any liberal arguments about the job Clinton did by bending over to "Fair Trade" in the World.

So you want to drive that rice-burning Tacoma over the purple mountains here in the US, go ahead, just don't expect the bulk of that money to ever see this country again.

I digress ...

I primarily single out the Japanese manufacturers because they are the companies that repeatedly practiced unfair trade practices. I don't hate people for driving Japanese cars, I just can't respect them.

I always try to buy American on anything. Be it shoes, clothing, etc. Granted a lot of the import stuff may seem better but in actuality is a $100.00 pair of Chinese sneakers any better than
a $40.00 American pair? Or are we paying for the name (Nike, Reebok, etc.) & not the quality.? Just because Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods wears them, does that make them better? I think not.. I want to buy American. I try hard to buy American. If that puts somebody in Asia or Mexico out of work..Who frigging cares?? Not me. I want our country to keep on going. United States of America

Last time I checked Nike is a US company and Reebok is a UK company. Now their products maybe made in forign lands, but so is a lot of american auto makers with their product. Last time I heard Red Cross did not give all that money to help out in New York.

I am sure I will get flamed but I look for a quality product. I try to buy American. Walmart shoes do not hold up for me. Nike (an American company) is the most reliable shoe for me. My dakota (an american product) has had many major proplems. I will not buy DC again because of it.

A picture on the front page of the newspaper in a logging and former lumber community (Coos Bay, Oregon) of jobless people lined up outside the county courthouse to receive free USDA food distributions.

Looking in the background you can see a 600' ship going out to see loaded with raw logs.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but useless for Congress.

My father sent it to our Congressman. His reply was "My constituents do not have any interest in the state and community the picture was taken in. Therefore they did not see our point of view and are not concerned."

Please take the time to examine where everything you possess was manufactured.

Quander whether it is wise to end diplomacy with China.

Think of the jobs that are over there instead of here.

Keep it all in mind when you hear of the state of the economy and the unemployment rate. Keep in mind the unemployement rate is based on those currently collecting the 13-week benefit and what of those for whom the benefit has run out? How are they counted?

SOund like a liberal, don't I? I think I will be going before the accusations fly.

 As an immediate step, Honda donated eight all terrain vehicles (ATVs) to help rescue workers quickly navigate the difficult terrain around the World Trade Center. These vehicles provide immediate aid to speed recovery efforts and cleanup in the area.
 Honda had previously donated ten 12,000-watt commercial generators to the American Red Cross, for use in disaster relief efforts such as this.
 American Honda has established a special associate disaster relief fund to lead our philanthropic response. Company facilities around the country are forwarding contributions to American Honda that are matched under this program, and then supplemented by an additional corporate contribution to the relief efforts. Direct associate contributions have raised $416,376 from thousands of Honda associates, contractors and retirees from every Honda company in North America. In addition, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., Honda of America Mfg., Inc. and other sister companies in North America have contributed a total of $1,060,001, including company matching funds and direct cash contributions for a total of $1,476,377.
 American Honda sister companies in North America also have undertaken fundraising efforts. Honda of America Mfg. in Ohio matched its associates' contributions to the United Way of New York "September 11 Fund" under a special "Red, White and Blue Days" program September 27 & 28. Associates in Canadian operations are also providing matching gift funds to the American Red Cross.
 Honda continues to evaluate the most effective and meaningful ways to address the needs brought about by these tragic events.

 Porsche Cars North America underwrote Jerry Seinfeld's concert (featuring George Wallace, Chris Rock, Alan King, Will Ferrell, Bill Cosby, and Colin Quinn) at Carnegie Hall with all proceeds (over $1.8 million) going to the Twin Towers Fund and The New York Police and Fire Widows and Children's Fund.
 Also funds from a 50-state Drive For Hope event went to the same cause as did contributions from our own employees. Many such as Porsche are involved not to generate publicity for themselves but to provide help to those in need of it.

 Toyota donated $1 million to the Red Cross and matched additional funds donated by company associates. Employees and Toyota dealers (with the company's match) raised $930,000, bringing the total for Toyota to $1.93 million.
 Since many Toyota associates have expressed interest in contributing to the relief effort as well, a special fund has been established at Toyota Federal Credit Union.
 They are working with the American Red Cross to schedule a special series of blood drives on the TMS campus extending over a period of months when the need will be just as great.
 Toyota Logistics Services has offered the use of its seaport facilities in Newark to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for any use deemed necessary.
 Also, they have offered the use of vehicles and forklift trucks to emergency agencies.
 Toyota Financial Services' headquarters sponsored a Red, White and Blue day. All donations were voluntary and associates had a chance to display their patriotic colors. Various locations held bake sales, luncheons, pizza days, extra jeans' days, chili cook-offs, ribbon sales, goodie days, root beer float and popcorn snacks, prize drawings and a multitude of other activities. This resulted in donations of $41,854.79, clothing, shoes, toiletries, linens and other comfort items for those in need.
 Through negotiations with a local safety shoe distributor, the Associate Involvement Committee purchased 158 pairs of steel-toed boots at less than $17 a pair. The boots (160 pairs) are being forwarded to the Manhattan/NYC office of the American Red Cross.
Volkswagen
CLAIM:
The employees and management created a Foundation, funded initially with $2 million, to assist the children and victims with humanitarian help including medical and psychological assistance, rehabilitation and scholarships.
FACT:
 Volkswagen of America, Inc. is handing over 25 new EuroVans to the New York City Fire Department, to help the families of the firefighters who lost their lives responding to the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center, as well as to assist the department as it carries out its vital day-to-day responsibilities. The EuroVan is a mid-size van that provides abundant space for people and cargo. All vans will be specially prepped and equipped by the Department's vehicle administration services, with such items as short-wave radios, sirens, and logos.
 The employees and management of the Volkswagen Group decided to create a Foundation to assist victims of terrorist attacks in the United States. The Foundation will be funded initially with $2 million dollars (US) from Volkswagen. This will include medical and psychological assistance as well as rehabilitation and scholarships.
 Volkswagen's 1,000 dealers in the U.S. and Canada have also pledged to meet this number over the next six months.

I stand behind everything I said in my previous e-mail. I was hesitant to comment on the initial e-mail because I suspected it may be inaccurate. It is obviously more bennificial, to America, to purchase products from an American company. In the case of Diamler Chrysler, Diamler is in the position of bolstering an American company rather than transplanting its business through questionable trade practices.

As for the crow, you can keep it!

The events of 9/11/01 were very terrible. But remember that your demand for cheap Nikes, low fuel cost for your fuel guzzling toys and arrogant cowboy attitudes caused the problem in the first place.
This event should make everyone look beyond borders and religion. You’re not Americans your HUMANS. Looking internally caused the problem in the first place.

How many non-”Americans" died in wars supported or sponsored by the American government? All for the so-called good of America. We all have to start looking at the BIG picture.

I hate to tell you this but share holder can have any nationality. The profits go to the share holders not the workers. I do not give a darn who gets the end profit. It is inpossable to trace the profits to one country. I care about the american worker!!! If Toyota, BMW, Diamler or Volkwagen will give him a job and help feed his kids I am with them. I hate so called American companys building their vechiles and parts mostly out of the country and then selling it back to American as American made.It is a shame when forgien companys invest in America more then American companys. I think we should charge GM, Ford, and Chyrlser the same import tarrif we do on import name plates until they see the light. They should have to put a huge 1 foot sticker on the windshield on the passenger side that can only be removed buy the end buyer stateing the exact % of import parts, labor or assembly. I would rather buy a Toyota made in America with American parts then a Chevy made in Mexico,Canada, Brasil or Korea!!!! You know all of the so called American Companys own pieces of various Japanese companys. GM owns part of Fuji Heavy Industrys,Subaru,Daewoo, Suzki, Iszuzu and Sabb to name a few; Ford owns some of Mazda and Jag; Daimler owns Chrysler, Mitsubishi and Hyndai. The list is longer then this but I do not have the material with me. Toyota is the last Japanese company that is entirely Japanese owned. Their is not a single vechile left that is in current production that is entirely made and assembled in America. If you are depending on the UAW or Teamster publications for your auto news you are only getting half the story. I am all for America but I will not tell a man that he can not feed his family buy working for a non U.S. company. I will not ask someone to buy a inferior product to support those lucky guys that get to work for GM, Chyrsler or Ford here in the U.S. if they are not turning out a product as good as the competition. When all things are equal I will actualy pay more to buy American if the quality and durability are all present. This time around I bought American because I could afford to buy American. If it last's I will consider another one. If this vechile does not last I will never buy another Chrysler. If you are silly enough to think that you are buy american when you buy any of the big three's products so be it!!! P.S. Guess who makes the Army's M16 currently and the M249?? The FRENCH "FN" is the name of the company. They do havce a plant in the U.S.A. now!! I gues we should get rid of our war planes too. The electronics were made in Japan and the joint stike fighter has some parts and assemblys made in Japan as well. Heck even alot of our beef was not grown here in the before mad cow. Respect???
I'd like to see maybe the rest of the world treating US with some respect.
The USA is the largest market in the world and last time I checked, most countries make a darn good living selling their wares here.
Then check out the amount of foreign aid we give on a yearly basis. It boggles the mind to see how much we send out.
Then we cut a check for Mexico for 20 billion in 1994 after they devalued the peso and caused the mexican economy to collapse.
I'd be curious to know how much other countries have ponied up to assist american in time of crisis.
WHo sent over the bulk of troops and military equip to fight the gulf war?
Who single handedly devised the Marshall Plan after WWII to rebuild Europe?
WHo rebuilt Japan after WWII?
Who provided the majority of the manpower and equipment to fight and win WW2?

Answer: AMerica!

SOrry,I don't feel any need to apologize for having the good fortune to live in America. Nor do I feel guilty because I live a good life and others do not. It is not a zero sum game. Its all about taking advantage of opportunites around you or creating opportunities so that you can move up the ladder.
Recall that over 200 years ago, certain people in the 13 colonies got a little tired of the british crown dictating order to us so we dumped their tea in a harbor, gathered our arms and fought for freedom. In the ensuing decades, millions of people toiled and rolled the dice and came over here and made this country a model of economic wealth and opportunity. Is it perfect? Of course not! But nowhere else in the world will you be able to live where the likes of a Bill Gates or Sam Walton can rise from rags to riches. WHere else can a man be walking in Philadelphia, with pennies in his pocket, two loaves of bread under his arm and be laughed at only to go on to become the greatest statesmen in the Western world? (Benjamin Franklin)
WHere else can a boy be so poor that he goes without shoes and has to borrow books to read by candle light go on to become the 16th president of our country? (Abe Lincoln)
How about a SCottish immigrant who, in the space of 30 years, built a steel empire the likes of which the world had yet to experience (Andrew Carnegie)
I could go on, but the point is obvious here.
We have an excellent standard of living and more opportunities than anyplace else. Notice I stated OPPORTUNITIES, not guarantees! THere is a difference. Sam Walton was NOT guaranteed success when he opened his first Ben Franklin store in 1945. Nor did Henry Ford have any sure shot at success when he crafted his first car in a shed in 1895. Success here is not guaranteed but your chance to TRY are!
That is what makes america great.

I rest my case.

TRIBUTE TO THE UNITED STATES

This, from a 1973 Canadian newspaper, is worth sharing.

America: The Good Neighbor.

Widespread but only partial news coverage was given recently to a remarkable editorial broadcast from Toronto by Gordon Sinclair, a Canadian television commentator. What follows is the full text of his trenchant remarks as printed in the Congressional Record:

"This Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least appreciated people on all the earth. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of these countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When France was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up, and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When earthquakes hit distant cities, it is the United States that hurries in to help. This spring, 59 American communities were flattened by tornadoes. Nobody helped.

The Marshall Plan and the Truman Policy pumped billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent, warmongering Americans.

I'd like to see just one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplane. Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tri-Star, or the Douglas DC10? If so, why don't they fly them? Why do all the International lines except Russia fly American Planes?

Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or woman on the moon? You talk about Japanese technocracy, and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy, and you get automobiles.

You talk about American technocracy, and you find men on the moon - not once, but several times - and safely home again.

You talk about scandals, and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everybody to look at. Even their draft-dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, and most of them, unless they are breaking Canadian laws, are getting American dollars from ma and pa at home to spend here.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke.

I can name you 5000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble. Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don't think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone, and I'm one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them get kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles. I hope Canada is not one of those."

We have much to be thankful for and proud of as Americans and today - while tragic - will provide us the opportunity to demonstrate our leadership and resolve.

Let me say this to all you people, I'm a paramedic with Fulton Co. FD. I put my life on the line everyday serving a community that thinks just because they donated some money to the victims relief fund, and baked us a few brownies, that can make up for the fact that I have to work second jobs and 70+hrs a week to support my wife and 2 kids cause this countrys priorities are ass backward, and the people who matter most in life , and make it possible to enjoy this "free" country are the ones who get $hit on the most and make the least money.

I'm sorry so many of my Bro's in FDNY died for such a thankless populace. Sure the money was given, the cards were written, and the cakes baked. But when it comes time to vote on a pay increase the the commisioners shoot it down because the citizens dont want to pay a few more cents in taxes. And too bad the damn cakes stopped coming in after a month cause some of them were pretty good.

For a short time we got free coffee, a few bucks off a meal, maybe a soda on the house by buisness's that said they appreciated what we did. But now? not anymore! how soon we forget.

That being said, yes I'm bitter, but every live I help save makes it all worth it.

The one thing I have no tolerance for is buying something just cause it's made in the USA. We should be building a product that is superior to anyone else's. And I dont have the money to invest in a POS that breaks down and leaves my family stranded regardless of where it is built! To buy an inferior product just encourages continued inferiority.

I own a 95 Dakota-LOVE IT and a 2000 Honda LOVE IT as well. BTW the Honda assembled with pride by American hands.

I'm with Mr. Whitley on this one. It's a great thing to have pride. Just don't forget those of us who fight and work hard everyday so the rest of you have the freedom and safety to say what you want, and to choose who's car you want to buy.

BlackDak02,Thank you for helping to sort out the lies and mis-information spread once again by irresponsible news organizations. The "story" was quite inflamatory-just look at this thread-and they obviously decided to run with it without checking the validity of the story.

People regardless of what you choose to drive, fair is fair.

SHAME ON YOU, CNN.

No problem, Chris, I was a volunteer firefighter for 10 years, I know what you have to deal with.

Like I said the snopes.com site is invaluable for checking out rumors. I don't know if it's true that that came down from CNN, for all I know that can be a rumor also.
