Subject: smoke from underdash IP: Logged
Message: When I push the brake pedal very hard or almost to the floor, the Gen. meter takes a dive. If I leave it there, smoke comes from a large double bundle of wires (30 or 40 wires) that goes into a plastic wiring trough under the steering column. Any thoughts? Larry, '92 Dak, ext. cab, 5.2L

Message: Larry, Maybe you have the brake pedal
grounding out on the wires or the electric
trailor brake thing is flipping out. Not very good
suggestions but just some ideas anyway.

Message: Yes, it is most likely a wireing problem, if you have put trailer brakes on it or maybe just a wiring harnes there is probably just a wire that maybe was not large enough to withstand the amperage and it has been melted and is touching metal somewhere. If you do have trailer lights on it i is more than likely the wires in the back that are crossing over so i would check them and see if there is any wires that are bare. Sorry if this doesnt help but it is a sugestion,

Message: SOMEONE CALL 911 QUICK.
That is a "no smoking" area in my truck.
Did you look under the dash while pushing the brake petal (motor running/tranny in park/neutral)? If nothing is malfunctioning then a short is unlikely, however looking for it is the only way to determine the problem.
