Message: I have a 2002 Dakota and noticed there's no heat shield/liner under the hood. Is this normal? Or did they leave it off at the factory? I always thought the liner was used to protect the paint from heat.

Message: Yep, they didn't install a liner on mine either. I'm thinking about swinging by a junk yard and seeing if they have one from a recent Dak... My '02 is louder than my '96...

Message: Guys,
In '01 anyway,
the SLT interior pack has the hood insulation!
That's one reason why I got so many things, at invoice price!
But, I couldn't get the fog lamps,(Sport pack), or the two tone paint if I would have got the sport pack. I opted for the SLT int.

Message: The hood insulation disappeared from the Dakota SLT package during the middle of the 2001 model year. It was a victim of DC cost cutting. I noticed that Overton's boating accessories sells a noise reduction kit for boats that could probably be used under the hood of your Dak. It consists of 24 sq.ft. of 1" fire retardant foil faced foam, seam tape, and spray adhesive. The price is $99. It can be found at www.overtons.com. Search for "noise reduction". It claims to offer a 15 dB (40%) noise reduction. The "Ram's Head" embossed hood insulation was nice, but I'm sure if you purchased it from your local Dodge dealer, they would want a small fortune for it. You could probably find one at a junkyard, but I'm not sure how removable they are (if they are glued on, it may be almost impossible to get off). Good luck.

Message: I've seen many other post on this, you can go to your dodge dealer and get them to order you one for cheap.
Personally, I don't think its a problem and won't bother.

Message: The factory hood liner on my 99 was attached using the same push buttons used to hold on the fender flares. I acutally like the look better without the hood liner since in NY it gets all salted up and you can't clean it. I even tried with a powerwasher.

Message: Yeah that's true 2THEXTRM the salt would suck. I saw that other post also somewhere and was considering ordering that liner from the dealer. I'm gonna try and get that underhood light though, it's pretty stupid that they did away with that.

Message: I beleive the hood liner acts more as a heat sheild to protect the hood from engine heat than to make it more quiet.

Message: Exocet,
I think you are right about them getting rid of the liner halfway through the 01 production year. My 2001 CC 4x4 was built in late May and it doesn't have the liner under the hood. I really don't notice it being noisy or anything. I have driven other cars with liners and they were noisier than my Dakota. Probably not worth the money to get it.

Message: Thanks for all the info. Checked with one of the dealers selling parts on line and costs for a liner (replacement part for 2001 Dakota) is about $54, plus the clips cost like $1.50 (each ?). I'm not that concerned about the noise reduction, although that would be nice. The main concern is avoiding heat damage to the paint. I've seen this problem on other vehicles and don't want to have the same experience.

Message: My 2001 QC did not have it either. I talked to my sales guy and they had it that same week. I went down and they installed it in about 15 minutes. I friendly but firm and he took care of me when he say that I was not going away!
