Subject: Help! Squeaky dash returns IP: Logged
Message: Please help...
My 2001 cc 4x4 has had a bird-chirping squeak
coming from the front left corner of the dashboard
for the last 4-5 months.
I have posted on this problem before and the solutions that were given were unsuccessful.
I was hoping that maybe someone else had this problem and can help.
It occurs when the temperature is above 40 degrees and when the truck is dry (during rain and snow it does not happen) and when I turn the steering wheel to the right. I live on a rural road and slight bumps makes the "bird chirp".
I have sprayed the steering column with WD-40 and other bushings with no success. I was just trying to save a trip to the dealership but that might be my next step. All comments are appreciated.
Thanks

This was covered in the last thread, but...
I had the exact same problem with the exact same symptoms (along with a few others on the board). I also tried lubing everything in sight (and even a few things that weren't) without the slightest improvement until I finally nailed the rubber grommet where the steering shaft goes through the firewall -- after which the problem went away immediately, completely, and permanently (or at least so far). It seems extremely propabable that you need to do the same. The grommet in question is not easy to get to from above or below, but can be accessed by removing the wheel and going in through the wheel well. This allows you to hit the area directly with penetrating lubricant. If you do not hit the area solidly and/or do not use a penetratimg lubricant (I used WD40) then you will not achieve results, or at least that was my experience. It is a real pain to get to but if you do it right I do believe that this procedure will solve your problem.
