Subject: Auxiliary backup light IP: Logged
Message: I have been thinking about mounting a light under the rear bumper for those times when I need to attach a trailer in the dark. It would be a little eaiser to see the ball hitch, also to backup. My initial guess is to pick up an inexpensive light, and wire the + directly to battery, and a switch in the cab. Any thoughts on doing this ?
Thanks

Message: I would hook it into the towing wiring just in front of the connector. It has reverse lighting provision for the trailer that may have backup lights. Another solution is to use a relay instead of a switch in the cab. Wire the relay coil into the backup lights and run your power back and through the relay. Don't forget to fuse it appropriately, either way. The fuse is usually 50% larger than expected current draw. For 20A lights, use 30 amp fuse. I'd use fast blow for safety.
