Message: I think you're mixing wheel and tire sizes.
You could go with bigger wheels - say 18x8 in front and 18x10 in back, but you'd have to make sure on the backspacing.
At stock ride height, you could easily fit 31x10-16 tires, which are 31 inches high, 10 inches wide and fit a 16 inch wheel.
Check the Bridgestone web site for alot more info in this.
Also, don't forget the goofy 6x4.5 bolt pattern limits your options in aftermarket wheels.

Message:
The biggest tire that you can fit on a Gen-III Dakota (2WD) is a 30" tire. 31" will require some sort of Body lift and a 32" tire will require suspension + body lift for proper clearance. I went from a 28", 30", 31" and then 32".

Message: I own a 99 Dakota sport with the optinal 15x8 rims.I just installed R/T fender flares. I need to know what's the widest tire I can replace my 255x65x15 to give me a wider stance? My truck has the stock height, but I am planning on lowering it 2"in front and 3"out back. If anyone knows please get back to me.

Message: 295x50x15 is popular, but 275x60 is prob more realistic. I had 255/60 on my 15x8's.
I have some pics of them on my page if you want to see
