Subject: Adjust Limited Slip? IP: Logged
Message: Is there an adjustment for the clutch in a limited slip rear axle? My 99 4x2 SLT has a limited slip rear axle, but it seems I have to get the revs way up for it to work. On snow and icy conditions the high revs don't do any good. I wonder if I could adjust it to engage at lower rear axle rpms, or do a "forced" higher gear start (like starting in 2nd gear with a manual transmission). Any ideas?

Message: Sounds like you need new clutches in the rear or a fluid change.

Message: I agree here, if you have never changed the axle oil change it now, uses 2 QTS of 75-90 wt gear oil, And two bottles of friction additive, use Mopar additive Only! And use the Black color silicone high temp sealant. from Permatex. And since the cover is off, spray the gears out well with Brake cleaner and this will flush out the entire system, use CRC brake clean the kind that does not leave residue, evaporates quick in a red/blk can.

Message: I have been wondering about spraying the gears out with brake cleaner but was afraid there were non-metal aprts in there that the chemicals in the cleaner would eat away at or damage.
As far as additive goes, is it possible to use the stuff Sta-Lube makes or is mopar addative the only stuff that is safe?

Message: Hey thanks everyone! I bought the truck used, with 29,000 miles on it. Most likely the axle and tranny fluids have not been changed, but I had planned on doing that. Perhaps it is just clutch slip, and if it is slipping I hope a fluid change will do it. Usually, once a clutch slips, it's shot. I'll get this work done and post the results. Oh, anyone run synthetic (Redline) in the rear axle?

Message: A lot of people run Redline, I am considering going to it too actually. I only have 2000 miles on my truck, so probably at 3000 when I change the oil, I will. If you check the search on this forum you should get a bunch of hits on redline, try it out!

Message: It does not hurt to spray out the gears with the correct stuff, just use what i said and all is well. also the posi additive does not work well with Synthetic gear oil, Stick to the normal gear oil and use Only Mopar additive.

Message: Actually kevster, the additive works O.K. with the synthetic oil. However, some synthetics do not require that the additive be used with their product. Read the labels before adding. You can put the oil (synthetic or regular) in the rear end and drive the vehicle. If the rearend chatters when turning, add some of the additive. Repeat this until the chattering goes away. This is called tuning the rear end. This is for clutch type rear ends and will keep the wear down to a minimum on the clutches while allowing maximum traction.
