 Subject: Statistical failure of 2000 balljoints??

After reading the numerous posts on this site, it seems everyone has bad balljoints. But, there has to be some balljoints that don't fail. Are we just hearing from the 5% or so that have bad balljoints or is the problem more common? I am just curious especially since I just had a balljoint replaced under warranty. Are there statistics out there for failed balljoints for 2000 daks?

I'm sitting at just under 30,000 miles and mine are fine. But I don't expect them to be fine forever because of the design...can't lube them so they will fail eventually. If mine fail under warranty they will be replaced on DC's dime, even though I know that those will eventually fail as well. If I'm out of warranty when they fail I'm buying quality aftermarket BJ's that can be lubed.

Mine are going out now at 25,000 miles and so is the rear end....this truck is starting to piss me off.....sorry had to vent...

I'm at 25K as well, and mine are starting to go. The tranny is also in need of dismantling and melting down to make something worthwhile. I'm sittin' at about 65% lovin' it and 35% gonna get rid of it. The lovin' it rating used to be much higher, though. :-)

I have 36,500 on my 2K Dak 4x2 and i have no probs, i have the 17x9 wheels with 275x50x17 tires. and i just had my trans serviced at 30,000 and i serviced the sure grip axle, no probs. I have heard of bad ball joints but if i ever have to replace them it will be Moog B Joints.

Do not forget that starting in 2000, the 4WD Dak got a TOTALLY NEW FRONT END that includes rack-n-pinion as well as some other goodies like IFS.
Are folks seing ball joint failures on this NEW design or the old 2WD design that has not changed for many years?

Our dak had a nice solid feeling front end when we got it new. After awhile, noticed a cluncking noise when going over bumps slow especially while off-road (approx 20,000). Dealer replaced upper left control arm which replaced the upper left balljoint under warranty (at 35,000 miles). THey would not do the alignment under warranty which I feel they should have. Took it in for alignment yesterday at the Goodyear dealer and it was out in all 3 settings. I asked them to check all other front end parts and they said everything else looks good and tight. So, i am crossing my fingers and hoping my other balljoints, etc. don't go out cuz our warranty ends at 36,000.
Also, the rubber seal around the failed balljoint actually tore.

I seem to have the same problem everyone else is having. I have a 2000 r/t CC. The only warning signs I know of is that the stearing feels softer as the balljoints become more worn, it's harder to keep the truck going straight at high speeds, and it may vibrate at high speeds. I replaced mine a year ago and I'm already looking at having to replace them again.

Just had my passenger upper ball joint replaced at 4800 miles ('03CC,2wd). Dealer drilled out the rivets and bolted the new one in (I understand that they don't replace entire upper control arm assembly anymore). I'm almost hoping that the other bjs go before warranty runs out. Sure, they'll just put in the same sh1tty one's that they've been using, but it'll be much easier for me to put moogs in at end of warranty- dealer will have done the hard part already.

I've got about 100K on my truck and haven't replaced them yet. It's a '97 5.2L 4x4. Granted, I've got some squeaking sounds like a gerbil in a wheel from the front end now, so I'm going to be replacing them soon. The extra parts are in my garage now. ;)

I just rolled over 45000 miles on my 2K Quad Cab 4X4, 5.9L. I had to but new front brake rotors on this last weekend, (to thin to turn), but the ball joints are all good. . .
. . .So far.

98800+ miles and still riding on original ball joints. No odd noises & only pulling I am having is from a bad alignment and a need for tires.
Only front end work I have done is dealer replaced rotors at 12k, brakes and new rotors at 71k and front shocks at 94k. No bj's yet...knock on wood!

Both uppers were shot at 60K on my 2000 CC. Lowers were getting loose at 120K, replaced those and the uppers just for fun while I was in there. The NAPA uppers that I put in at 60K were doing fine at 120K.

Just replaced my lowers at 16000 miles. One of the lower boots seperated. Rather than waiting for them to fail I just replaced them. What a PIA. DC knows that these joints are $hitty, but why do they still have the same design. Also why are they still riveted on the 2003 like my 2001. Seems like a part that definitely needs replacing in the life of the truck would be bolted. Also noticed that the boot, on the seperated one, was not full of grease. With the joints still in great shape, other than the boot, there should have been more grease in there. There was barely enough there to cover up the end of my thumb. A lot of the problems that people sill continue to have seem to be "built into" these trucks. Kind of make you wonder whether the dealers supposed to make more money on the maintenance or the trucks themselves.
