2001 Dakota 4.7 CC. Was wondering if anybody has any ideas why at 17,000 miles the brakes make a loud screach when braking. I had a 2000 dakota with 34,000 miles and never had a problem. Any insight would be appreciated.....

My 1995 Dak was doing the same thing when I first bought it. Turned out to be brake dust. I got the dealer to clean out the brakes and for the most part, the squeal has went away.

2001 QC 4.7 2WD SLT. Same issue, 17k miles, Mine started squeeling around 10k miles. Only happens under light breaking, if I let off, and re-apply the breaks it goes away. Does not happen in cold weather. Truck stops fine, no shake. Due for a check up at the dealer soon, its on my list. I will let you know what I find out when it gets fixed along with the cluncking in the front on sharp turns that everyone b!tches about.

Mine also disappears after letting off and re-applying. Although it does happen in cold weather also. I guess I need to take it in and have it looked at. The truck stops fine and there is no shake. The dealer will tell me it's normal(how could it be normal)? Oh well, thanks for the post...........

Do they put the blue RTV Silicone gasket sealer stuff on the back of brake pads anymore?

They used to supply the stuff with replacement pads, but I haven't seen any in the kits, lately.

They used to tell you to apply the stuff to the back of the pads an it's function was to quiet the squeak of the brakes.

I'd try having some put on just to see if that resolves the problem. Just be sure it is the high temp type as the pads will become very hot in use.

That stuff makes he brake pedal feel "squishy"

Modern (quality) brake pads include the antisqueel layer between the frictiion surface and the pad backing plate.

Here are some examples of QUALITY brake pad manufacturers;
