Subject: Ramsey Winch Installed IP: Logged
Message: I was looking on the web about 2 months ago for any information on the installation of a winch on my 2000 Dakota. You see after only having the truck about 8 days new, I got it stuck in Oregon
in some snow one sunny day. It was the marble type of snow and all tires just spun and spun. I was 2 feet away from the pavement at an over look buy the side of the road, and couldn’t get out. "If I only had a winch" I told my wife. She agreed "yeepee" I said inside myself. So I saved my money and looked for one. I was trying to find out how hard it would be and what steps it would take...etc to install. I unlucky so when I got mine I decided that I would take picture and document the install for others who maybe wondering like I was how hard it would be. So check this URL out and let me know what you think.
Thanks
Shane

Message: hey bro nice job on the install. I really hate to rain on your parade but the Ramsey mounting kit is crap. I know cause I had one and switched to a Warn.
you got the same exact one that I got from Ramsey. Anyway the problem with it is ( I had it with a Ramsey platinum 9500) that the winch sits really high on the bars so when you go and use the winch for pulling it will pull the brush guard down. First thing to do is get RID of the cheezy black carriage bolts that come with the kit. they are really cheap and WILl break if you try to tighten them too much. the whole thing will loosen on you. you have the one kit that has the 2 bolts that tie the frame bars to the upright bars right? I would drill another hole and make it a 3 bolt system. another thing you want to do is redrill the winch carrier and bring it lower so it sits jsut above the bumper.
Thats the problems I had with my carrier. the winch itself was great. the mounting kit sucked. I would do at least those things i described above.
PS
DO NOT weld the thing together cause youll have to cut it apart if you ever want to remove it.
Trust me I did that jsut to keep it from flexing itself to pieces

Message: Nice work Shane, excellent web page too.
My winch mounts right on my trailer hitch, and removes very quickly. Only difference is when I get stuck, I have to go back the way I came from.
