I went shopping for a dakota the other day, drove 3.9 V6 and 4.7 V8, there is no comparison on power the V8 is an awesome motor, but with gas prices as high as they are I am concerned about gas mileage. Sticker on V8 12mpg, V6 16mpg. I know it depends on how you drive but are these accurate ratings, Will be getting a spd so I know that will help some. Are there any inexpensive ways to get better mileage out of the V8? Thanks for your responses.

I have heard of several people getting better mpg with the v8 vs v6 in the same truck. wonder why? the v8 doesn't work as hard to push the truck. i get around 12-14 the city with my 95 V6. a friend gets 15-16. he has 93 v8. both x-cab auto. mine is sport his is le. i'd go with the V8.

I get a little over 14 mpg on a V8 5spd. EPA rating for my truck is 13. There are easy mods to do to increase slightly. Go for the V8, you won't be disappointed later.

I get a little over 16 mpg around town on reformulated crappy gas. About 2 more on good stuff. Not bad for a 2001 Quad, 4X4,4.7L,3.93 gears,Intense intake.

OK, Now I know that the prices of gas have went up, but since when has MPG become so important?
There are rice burning cars and trucks out there that will get 30mpg if its that important. You are buying a REAL truck here. I test drove both engines, and I bought the v8.

In my opinion, you will be much happier with the 8..For a few bucks a week it may cost to drive it, its worth it..:)

I had a 97 with the V6 and 5 speed and now have a 2001 with the 4.7 V8 and automatic. I am getting between 16 and 17 with the V8 which is about what I got with the V6. But "O what fun with the V8"
Why not drive a "race horse"

That new Honda hybrid gets 70mpg. And has decent power!

But the V-8 is an engine that when you pop you hood, everyone knows your the man. If you drive resonable you'll get great miliage...for a truck.

Go for the v8, you might need the power sometime in the future for towing, plowing, etc.
