Subject: Extended use of O/D off?
IP: Logged

Message:
Anyone have any problems driving around with the overdrive off? I prefer to drive around town that way. Better response and quickness not waiting for the O/D to kick out.
Any comments?

Actually it's easier on the tranny if you leave the OD off around town, it doesn't have to switch from 3rd-4th and 4th-3rd so offten, only downside is loss of gas mileage.

On my commute, I turn O/D off as soon as I'm off the highway, some questions:

At times on local roads, can still do 55MPH, other then not getting the best gas milage, will running 55MPH in the higher RPMs do anything bad?

What is the highest speed I should be running when turning O/D off or on?

Thanks...

At least you can turn yours off and on. Mine for some reason I cannot, it's on all the time. The botton is there, but it doesn't trun it on/off. They just replaced my tranny and still no good (the tranny needed it after I parked the truck in a creekbed), ok so it was slightly deeper than it looked!

any ideas?

I'm glad you posted this, I've been wondering about this lately too. I rarely turn mine off except on those rare ocassions when I'm towing, I just never think about it.

Unless your looking for snappy throttle responce just keep it on when your driving around town. Ive allways had it on and have almost half a million km on the truck with no tranny problems.

Unless your towing just keep it on and claim your gas milage.

Your owners manual tells you to tow with the OD off. They don't set a limit. If it was bad they would say so. Besides that, I cannot find any reason why the tranny will suffer. More RPMs won't help the engine at high speeds but the tranny will probably run cooler. Since I switched from 3.55 to 3.92 gears, my tranny doesn't shift as much as Clevite was talking about so I don't worry about it. As far as speed, Mace, I once had a 70 Challenger with 3.55 gears. No OD and no lockup torque converter. It would run higher rpms than a Dakota with 3.55s and lockup torque converter when OD is off. I ran it over 120 more than one time. Hope this helps.
Another observation - some people think that turning the OD off when drag racing helps. We have tried it both ways several times at the drag strip on my Dakota and my sons Lightening and found NO difference.

Back to local roads and driving in traffic, wouldn't having O/D off save wear and tear on the system, what with the less shifting, or in true 30-40MPH only driving conditons, O/D or hunting between gears doesn't even come into play?

Yep! Hunting between gears is a bad thing. Builds heat and causes wear. I don't think my truck shifts to OD until 45 but you are better off with it turned off if you have that happening. If the tranny is not having trouble finding one gear to stay in, then it won't matter if OD is on or off.

Thanks to all that responded. I figured I wasn't the only one driving that way. I will stay with O/D off for in-town driving because I like the better response and especially if it is easier on the tranny. This kind of discussion is what makes this site really useful.

I would be more concerned about why your trany is hunting for the right gear. I have 10,000 miles my Dak and have never had it hunt for gears at all.

I have 3,800 miles on my 01 now and every time I start it up, I turn O/D off. When I drive in OD, it shifts into it at around 30 and as soon as I hit the gas, it shifts out. I figure it's pointless for it to keep shifting in and out, so I just leave it off.

All that has been said is quite true, I tow A LOT with my Dak (I am in the boat business) and run with the overdrive off unless it's really flat, and even then if I'm towing more than 4,000 lbs. or so. Remember, overdrive is a pretty new thing and trucks did just fine without it for decades. The gas mileage savings is significant, but you can run with it off as much as you like.

Another comment here; some people mention shift "hunting" or shifting in and out of O/D. I think the TV cable adjustment has something to do with that. I adjusted mine to take all the slack in the cable and it made a world of difference.
Shifts seem a bit crisper, and it holds the revs up higher until it shifts, and I got better acceleration. I like the results.

After reading all the comments about driving with O/D off, I have started to do the same thing.

I have noticed less downshifting of the transmission, and better throttle response. Can't say for certain whether or not fuel economy has taken a hit tho'. I hope driving around at 90 km/h without O/D won't harm the transmission !

I leave my O/D off on my R/T when I'm cruizin cuz people can hear me comin...its usually in 3rd gear but in 4th they don't hear it was well. I also use it to sortof downshift when I'm coming off the highway. I turn it off about 50 so it downshifts and saves wear on the brakes.

I'm a contract driver in town and I always leave my OD on, saves me alot on gas and I've never had any shifting problems. Once I get above 50 km/h it shifts into OD and won't shift back out until I slow to below 40, not a bad range. I find that with OD off it rev's too high(318), about 1300 rpm and with it on at 50 my rpm's are about 1000, big difference to me at the pumps, especially concidering that I only run premium. Only time I turn it off is when I'm towing. Steph.

Funny, I get the same mpg with it on as with it off. Esp. when towing. Even at 65 I notice very little mpg difference. This is with 5.9 and 3.55 so the difference at 65mph is 1700 rpms to about 2500 if my memory is correct.

I have a '92 Dak with almost 120k and my tranny drops into O/D as fast as it can. I've been cruising 25-30 miles an hour at like 1000 rpm. I turn mine off in true in town driving and actually get better gas mileage.

First of all 92dakotahd if you own a 92 you're Gen2 and you guys saying you're getting better gas mileage with your O/D off you must be cruising under 45 km/h, if not please explain to me how you're achieving this!

Fair enough 92 dakotahd, you must be in a small town with lower posted speed limits. Around here the average max speed allowed is 50 km/h. And what is the Gen years? I thought it was Gen1 87-90, Gen2 91-96 and Gen3 97-current but now I'm just not sure. Correct me if I'm wrong and if I am, my sincerest apologies.

Hey steph and 92dakotahd,
not to intrude, but I think you two are comparing speeds in miles per hour to kilometers per hour. One of you needs to convert your units. That will make a big difference in what you guys are discussing. Steph was saying 50 km/hr, which is 31 mi/hr.

92dakotahd, you were talking 45 mi/hr, which is 72 km/hr. Big difference in speed.

Yes, I'm a dork, but just trying to help.

Shawn
