Yes the century does lock the tailgate. I have had both the ARE and the century. They are both nice. I liked the fact that the ARE had the same design as the hood on the Dakota. The century doesn't do that but is supposed to be a heavier fiberglass. It came down to price for me. $700.00 for century vs over $800 for ARE. Plus tax for both.

ARE. For my quad-cab it weighs in at about 100lbs. They also design it with the same contours of your hood. The 'lines' on the dakota hood continue on the ARE tonneau. Pretty nice. Single latch, single lock. 4-clamps for easy removal, and a same-color plastic trim around the bottom edge to prevent chipping. I've seen a ton of other covers out there without that plastic stripping that have paint peeling/chipping problems. Make sure you get one with it.

Good luck!

YJ Can you give more info on the plastic strip on the ARE cover ?
Does the strip protect the side rails of the truck from paint chips and scuffs ?
My main concern is least amount of damage to the trucks paint when you take the cover off to turn the lease truck back in .

Only problem I had with my ARE Tonneau was that when the clamps were put on the front of the tonneau they put it on so tight that the rivets put demples in the sheet metal of the bed. Just make sure they put extra foam at those points. NO rubbing any where else. You can even get the keyless entry for it. I haven't got it yet but I love it. I also got it with charcoal liner looks way better.

Mig-29,
The plastic strip protects the tonneau cover from chipping. It seems they are most vulnerable at the edges from paint chips and peeling. With this small/thin plastic 'strip' hugging the entire edge of the tonneau, less chance of the peeling problem. The whole unit sits on top of your bed-rails. Does not hang over the edge like the lo-rider. When putting it on, they are completely adjustable to prevent contact with the paint on your bed-rails if you don't have a bed-liner.

Let me know if I can answer anything else about the ARE tonneau. Just to let you know, I've been extremely happy with mine. The paint will probably outlast the $hitty paint job on my truck. (2000) :-) Also, for your reference, I paid about $700 installed up here in Washington state. I've seen people post a bit less and a bit more for their ARE's.

Good luck!
YJ

The ARE dealer here does sell the cover for less than $800 but he will screw it into the truck. Ouch!! He wanted extra for the clamps. $35 a piece I think.

Graphite,
That dealer is jerkin' you around. The clamps were nothing for me, and shouldn't be since there's nothing too them. You could probably just go and buy your own C-clamps. Screwing it in would take him 2-3 times as long. There are thin rails for the frame of the ARE tonneau that rest on your bed-rails, with some foam in between, then the clamps are put on to hold the top of the tonneau rail to the underside of your bed-rail. Like I said, nothin' too it. Maybe $35 for all 4.

Good Luck.

IMO the Innovations ProSport tonnaue with built in spoiler is the best looking and best design. Carpeted underside matches bedrug carpet perfectly. Two key lock that go one on each bed rail for better security than single lock on the tailgate. Also has built in LED 3rd brake light. They come painted from what I've heard, but are aroun $800-$1000 depoending on dealer and shiping. I got mine used for FAR less though.

I got an ARE for my Club Cab a couple of months ago and have been nothing but pleased with it. Color matches perfect. I just took it to the car wash the other day and only had a couple of drops in the bed, nothing to worry about. I would definately recommend. Check out my website for pics of the cover.

YJ, Yes I think the ARE dealer was trying to rip me off. He claimed that his screws/bolts were better than the clamps because the clamps will loosen over time and the cover will fall off. Also my wife and I both needed covers and he would not make a package deal for use and the Century dealer would. Like I said earlier I have had both covers and would buy either one if the price was the same, just not from that dealer. The century's for 2002 are a snap lock design and the lock is on the rear of the cover just like the ARE instead of on the top like it used to be. Color match is very good.

Sounds good to me, Graphite. Best of luck to ya. Just for reference, I've had my ARE for over 8 months and the clamps haven't loosened a bit. Kind of amazing with my less than smooth driving style. :-) The central latch extends two bars across each bedrail portion of the tonneau frame. It's very secure, and as Bill stated, keeps your bed quite dry.

I hope the tonneau you go for works out for you.

What about the SnugLid by SnugTop?

I got to play with one at a truck store, and it seems nice and well made. I ordered one that should be here in 3 weeks. It will be carpeted underneath and have the SnugGrip clamp on system. It cost $790 plus tax.

If you like a low profile, easy to remove(35lbs), locking hard tonneau , you all should check out www.kcovers.com . It comes in any color you want , as long as it's black (Henry Ford's line ). Their not as sleek as the top end fiberglass tonneaus, but weigh less, cost less ($450.00), and are more practical if you regularly use the bed of your pick-up. I'm on my 4th truck ('83 S10 full cap/'87 S10 full cap/ '93 Nissan KingCab FG tonneau ) and as of Dec'01 , a 2001 4.7 QC auto 4X4 3.55 K-cover .
