Message: I got one from autoloc.com. They claim that thier parts are easy installs, but you might wanna thing twice about trying to install it on a dakota, it is a pain. I ended up going to an installer and had them install it, Oh and by the way its probably one of the most time consuming and expensive installs.

Message: I have a remote starter added as part of my DEI/Avital alarm package. The main reason the Dakotas are a pain in the ass is because the thick grey key fobs (from newer models) have smart chips inside of them, you can't start the truck without it. I had to sacrifice a key which is now cut up and buried in next to the alarm for it to work properly. The door locks are a pain too, because it uses a common wire with different voltage levels for lock/unlock, you have to use particular ohm level resistors inline to make it work. The bottom line? Have a shop install it for you unless you're an electronics expert.
The remote start is great otherwise, it was a huge help this summer when the temperatures climb over 110 to have the A/C going ahead of time.

Message: I have the DEI alarm/remote start setup as well. It has about a 70 meter range unless you're goin' through concrete. But glass and sheetrock seem ok.
Had it installed.

Message: Recently installed a bulldog remote starter on a '99 Dakota. Works fine, except that when the remote starter is used to start the truck, the check engine line stays on until it is reset with a reader. Once reset, starting with a key does not cause check engine to stay on - only when the remote starter is used. Works properly otherwise.
Any ideas?

Message: Hey Skoorb. I've got a 2001 4.7 auto, 4x4 and installed a bulldog starter just after Christmas.
There is not alot of room for fingers in the wiring harness in the steering column but otherwise the install wasn't that bad.(about 2 hours)
Their instructions were good (video included) but you may have to download the correct diagrams from their site due to a mislabelling problem. They warn you about it within the package.
You tie into about 6 or 7 different wires I think.
Now, I don't have power windows or locks or need it linked to a garage door opener. The install gets much more difficult if you do. I would get it installed if that was the case.
