Subject: Fun in the snow. IP: Logged
Message: I took my truck up yesterday night to a motocross track that has been snowed over up in the mountains. We went up there to go sledding, but I ended up taking a friend hooky-bobin' (behind towed on a sled by vechile) with my truck instead -- so much for the original plan. We went jumping/sliding around in the snow with a 2WD truck with no chains, heh. I can say, that 3 80-pound bags in the bed are NOT enough weight for good traction in deep snow. It was fun, but for the arguement of how much weight in the back for winter, if it's deep snow, you need about 400 and it works great.
I only got him to 40 MPH at the most though, due to the roads twists and short guard rails that overlooked very steep slopes.
I think I finally wore in my clutch too (1800 miles on a 2002).
It was a lotta fun, does anyone else here go riding around in the snow. With a 4WD vehicle I hope, cuz 2WD is a b!tch.

Message: Been driving every Vermont winter since the age of 16. (40 now)
It is a lot of fun to find the unplowed back roads and go 4 wheelin. I have TRUE 3WD (LSD and SOTF xfer case.)
It is ALWAYS a good idea to "practice" sliding around so you know how to handle a skid when it happens for real. (and it is a BLAST playin in the snow doin 360s.)
When my daughter got her drivers lincense at age 16... I took her out in the very first snowstorm to "practice" sliding around. This is a learning experience that teaches the limits of the vehicle under controlled conditions.
A word of warning about putting too much weight in the bed (of your truck).... on sharp corners, the rear-end of your truck will tend to "come around" and pass the front wheels if you are not careful.

Message: Yeah, there are some downfalls to more weight; I've been through that already. Around town I do just fine, but out in the mountains it helps quite a bit to have more.
I agree totally on you have to know how your vehicle slides around so you know how to handle it in a nasty situation. I did the exact same thing, 'cept in a 4Runner -- what I first learned in.
