Subject: Too Much Oil IP: Logged
Message: I just got an oil change at a local garage and while checking up on their work, I found that they add too much oil. About an inch above the full mark on the dip stick. I'm guessing that is a quart/ 1 litre too much. Can this hurt my engine? Should I drain some off or just leave it?

Message: What's the oil pressure gauge showing at idle and at road speed? If it's abnormally high then drain it.
If you leave too much in you'll blow some seal somewhere!

Message: It is a good idea to drain it because the crank could foam the oil causing problems.

Message: CW's right your oil pump could cavitate from the rod slosh and suck air and that would be all she wrote.

Message: Yes - drain off the excess oil, return to whomever changed your oil, and ask for a refund. Tell them you're totally p'd off!
Have you considered changing the fluids yourself? Changing the oil on these things is easy - and cheap - by the way. I have even changed the rear and tranny fluids on my Durango. Messy -- but pretty easy and I am certain things are cleaned up appropriately, correct levels are inserted, etc. -- Jim

Message: I would take it back & let them drain the excess. That way you can prove it was overfilled. If you drain it then it is your word against theirs. Plus it gets entered into a file (computer or whatever). That just does a better job of CYA for you.

Message: I was curious about the "too much oil" thing. My 92 Dak with almost 120K miles on it and the oil pressure was kinda dismal by the gauge readout. It rarely moved at all and just sat at the minimum line. The last time I changed the oil I put just about a third of a quart extra in and was curious as to whether or not I should drain this off and not do it again.

Message: 92dakotahd 1/3 QUART TOO MUCH SHOULD NOT HURT ANYTHING. It is always best not to overfill in the first place. Once you get a 1/2 quart or more over you can be in for trouble. The dismil oil pressure is a good sign that either your sending unit or oil pump is about to fail. You should check your oil pressure with a manual guage. If it agrees with the sending unit change your oil pump before the low oil pressure destroys your engine.

Message: KJ
When you fill the oil up after changing the oil and filter. Put in 5 (if it holds 6) and check the stick after a couple of mins. Then use the reading to gague the rest of the amount you need to put in. The engine holds a little oil here and there, unless it hasn't been run in a long time. My 5.2 holds 5 with the filter change, but I only use 4 1/2-4 3/4 because of that. Does go down a little after running the engine, as the filter now has some in it.

Message: Trust me too much oil can cause big problems. Two days ago I took my 2002 intrepid into the dealer to have the oil changed. Once done I drove 3km and the car started shaking, smoking white fumes and knocking. Later we discovered that the old oil was never drained and new oil was put on top of it. There was 10 liters of oil in the car at least. It appears that the oil got into the converter, sensors and exhaust system. I am still waiting to see what they are going to do about fixing it. Anyone got any suggestion on what I should be cautions about?

Message: Holy crap. Twice as much as needed??? May have forced some extra blow by and maybe worse. There probably wasn't much room for AIR to breath in the crank case. Damn. I've never known of that happening to anyone!
