Message: Since I put in a Robert Shaw 180 t-stat I noticed some weird things about my 93 Dakota with 5.2 and auto. First, it doesnt get up to the temp(1/3
into the gauge) it did before I I am not sure if this can hurt things since its barely in the gauge. Next, it appears like my temp gauge seems to be grounding out or something. It will stay in the cooler operating temp range and then quickly bottom out, then come back up before it stays down for good. I am wondering if this new colder t-stat is better or worse for my dak.

Message: Try checking and wiggling the single wire connector near the thermostat. It is the one for the gauge.

Message: It seems only to not work after the motor heats up a bit. I will try what you said though, thanks.

Message: Keep in mind that the new 180 T- stat could be sticking in a open position causing the motor to run extra cooler than it should. Feel your upper and lwr radiator hoses,do they feel warm or more hot. do you get warm air from the defroster or cool air? Sometimes too you could have an air bubble next to the temp sensor on the block causing bad readings. burp the system.

Message:
The system is self bleeding. If you overflow bottle has the correct level and you don't have any coolant leaks, driving it will let it bleed itself. With the 180 in cooler weather you will barely get into the normal range if at all.

Message: I burp the sysyem by, when then motor is warmed up really good, when ya get home from a drive, open hood, take a good towel place over radiator cap, turn and be Carefull under preassure, and HOT, turn to first stop and it will spew out coolant then turn cap in direction to retighten.. and it is done. I f you dont have much preassure ya could have a bad Radiator cap. I believe a 13-15 psi cap is used.

Message: Well, I just dont get it. I put in a Robert Shaw 195 t-stat until warmer weather and the problem of my temp gauge is still there. As soon as it hits operating temp, the needle just dies(bottoms out). If I replace the temp sensor unit, it would be the 4th one in a year(since I had the truck).

Message: On a 5.2L the sensor nearest the t-stat is for the computer. The Temp gauge sensor is the one behind the alt and nearest to the pass side rocker cover.
