Subject: Towing with full time 4WD IP: Logged
Message: I just ordered a 2002 QC 4.7 auto 4X4 full time transfer case, heavy duty service group, trailer towing group. And I was wondering if it is ok to tow light loads with the full time transfer case ?
Would towing in full time place undo wear on the vehicle ?
Thanks George

Message: Towing with the full time transfer case is fine. the truck that you ordered will be an all wheel drive vehicle. The drive train components are made to handle the wear. The drive trains are non binding in all wheel drive mode. You will still have to turn the nob to have 4 wheel drive. Do not tow a trailer or drive around in 4 wheel drive on dry pavement. You will do serious damage. Just leave your selector switch in awd mode. I hope this made sense to you. If not let me know and I will try to explain it more.

Message: My advice is to change the transfercase oil every second oil change it is the part that is doing the slipping. It uses ATF+4.

Message: Does the AWD transfercase "slip" or is there a regular differential in it?

Message: I am pretty sure they use a syimilar set up to the jeep. There is a pump in the transfercase that engauges a clutch when it sees a certain differential in wheel speed front to rear. But I haven't got a book here at the moment.

Message: I have a 2001 CC 4.7 AWD and I have used it for towing a 22 foot bass boat with a tandom axile trailer. No problem whatso ever. THe only thing you will notice is the gas gage going down a little faster. Just rember to turn the overdrive off if you are towing in hills or mountins. That will cause undo stress on the tranny.

Message: Ron/CW,
I have a '99 Jeep with the Quad Drive and an '01 Dakota with AWD. They are very different systems. The Jeep system has type of "locking" differential in the transfer case while the Dakota is "open" in AWD mode. Also, the Jeep has a Hi and Lo range but no lock. The Dakota has the lock as well as Hi and Lo. I like the Dakota system better on the hiway but I think the Jeep system is better off-road since up to 100% of the Jeep power can go to any combination of wheels with traction (the locking feature is also in the front and rear differentials). You can find torque ratings for the transfer cases at the New Venture Gear web site (I don't have it at hand).

Message: Found the link referenced in my earlier post. Go to http://www.newventuregear.com/tcases.html. The NV 242 is the one for the '01 Dakota AWD and the NV 247 is the Quad Drive Jeep GC.
