Subject: Bed Liner? IP: Logged
Message: Spray in or Drop in?
Which is better? I want to preserve those drain holes up near the front of the bed so the water does not pool. Any suggestions?
Seems like the spray in would let you retain those holes.

Message: Spray on is much better.
I drilled two 1/2" holes (one on each side) at the front of the bed and trimmed them out with plastic inserts. Looks real clean and drains well, even in a downpour.

Message: Here's another point of view. I went with the drop in because of http://www.pendacorp.com/ page that compares the two. Sure, there selling them, but it give a good side by side comparsion.

Message: If you want something cheap, indestructible, and will keep stuff from sliding around, use stall mats for horses, they won't protect the sides but they're the toughest things around. I paid $38ea for a pair of 4'x6' sheets and cut them with a utility knife.

Message: Drop-ins are slick and you need a rubber mat in the back if you want to carry items in the box. Try putting in a gas can or a couple gallons of paint in a drop-in liner. If you want them in the front, hit the brakes, if you want them in the back, hit the gas. There are probably liners out there that have aleviated this problem but that was my experience when I HAD one. I now have a mat that I can take out and clean it and the box also. Plus you can put your mat in when you want to haul something and leave it out when you don't.
I had the dealer install a plastic tailgate protector. You can just purchase the tailgate protector and not the liner, (at least at my dealership).

Message: I recommend a spray in liner because it protects againt rust, things wont slide around like in a drop in liner, and it also makes your truck look sweet. I have the rhino spray in liner and really enjoy it. Its a great investment to make into any truck. And it also has lifetime warranty. As far as which one to choose from, well it comes down to personal taste. Both the rhino and line-x spray in liners are fantastic.

Message: My 97 came with an over-rail drop in. I took it out and nearly fainted! The scratches in the bed were so deep and many that I was in pure shock. So now I have a tonneau and I am going to use a spray on. I have a few co-workers that love em.

Message: Go with a spray-in.
Sorry Wayne D. you will be replacing you bed in about 3 to 5 years. My sister in law has a 96 dakota with a drop-in and her bed is completely rusted through in several areas. The drop-ins trap water beneath then and don’t allow it to drain out. Over time this causes rust.
Lets talk about that Penda vs Spray on site.
I like how they are not willing to stand behind their arguments and name their test spray-ons.
They said Spray-ons Scuff 10 times faster.
No scuffing here, Ive been able to spray the line-x off with some water and any marks go away.
They say penda's are twice as dent resistant as spray-ons Look at the numbers they give 33.0 and 16.5 for each spray on? What do these numbers represent? My vehicle came with a drop-in bed I bought it used and when I took the drop-in out there were dents in the back. So far with my line-x I have no futher dents. Also the line-x covered up the existing dents. As for dents the only thing the drop-in did for me was hide them at the time of purchase.
Penda is more resistant to UV. Most spray-ons have a UV protection you can add in.
Spray-ons damge your truck? No they will not, Yes its true they will sand down the bed of your truck, but who would know, the line-x spray on will NEVER come off it's warranted for life. If ever damaged line-x will repair it for free. Many Dodge dealers will sell you a truck with line-x installed.
Check this out about line-x
Quantico, VA. (May 11, 2001) - Line-X was the only product, in the group of 27 coatings selected, to pass ALL tests. Recently this was demonstrated at the annual Force Protection Demonstration at Quantico Marine Corps Base. Over one thousand high level military and other official dignitaries witnessed the demonstration.
The Air Force Research lab, during a previous test, found that it took at least 1,000 pounds equivalent of TNT to "make Line-X fail and even then it only tore the coating... fragmentation was still averted." "Line-X could save lives if applied to buildings subjected to bomb force."
Penda’s web site is trying to say their product is better but they have very vauge tests to back their claim up.
Read through this board you will find more people with spray-ons then drop-ins.
Co check on ebay for drop-in bed liners you will find a few for sale there, but look at the auctions they usually never get bid on. No one wants these things… Mine went into the dumpster.

Message: This is a personal choice issue. There is no better than the other.
I prefer the drop-ins. I haven't had any problems with rust. There are drain holes in the drop-in that match the bed.
The main reason I prefer the drop-in is that it protects your box from dent/dings better that a spray-in. If something hard and heavy smacks the inside of your box in a spray-in, it will dent it. It may not scratch it, but it will dent. If you don't believe me, take a small sledge hammer and try it out with a light swing.
A mat will cure the slipping problem.
The drop-ins are cheaper. If they get messed up, you can buy another one and your box looks new.
Of course the spray-ins look kick-ass.
