Subject: Dakota 4-wheel drive issue IP: Logged
Message: I've got a 2001 Dakota 4X4 SLT with manual tranny and the 4.7 ltr engine. Anyway, now that winter is here in Northern Minnesota I've had an opportunity to use 4-wheel drive. When I turn sharply right or left at slow speeds (while only in 4 wheel drive) it distinctly feels as though I've got the emergency brake on (for lack of a better description)(no, the emergency brake isn't really on), but the truck certainly seems to want to come to a halt much quicker than when it's in 2-wheel drive. Happens both backing up or moving forwards but again, only when I'm turning sharply to the right or left. Any opinions as to whether this is "normal" or not? Greatly appreciate any input.

Message: It's a "feature" of 4 wheel drives. Perfectly normal.

Message: It's because there is not any slip, if a wheel was spinning it wouldn't do that...

Message: I was freaked out and pissed off when I first tried my 4x4 out back in High School. It did the same thing. I found out that it is totally common on all 4x4s. Even our HMMVs at work do it when in low 4wd gear and I know those are real world 4x4s.
