Subject: Whattya Think About These??? IP: Logged
Message: Since we're so far off topic in here lately, I figured, what the heck. I'll throw this out and ask your opinion. Maybe I am simply a guy with "no taste" regarding this matter. Anyhow... another forum that I frequent (I won't mention which) people talk about their SUV's as if they're human. "It's Scarlet's first birthday," "I bought Emerald a new Flowmaster," "Alpine got her first oil change." Sickening... to say the least, but that's just my humble opinion. In this forum, these people have seem to "adopted" the PT Cruiser as their "little brother." "Scarlet got a new little brother today," then they post photos of the two "tucked in their crib," AKA, the garage. Further nausiation. My question is this (and maybe I got into too much gory detail there -- ) what do you folks think of the PT Cruiser? I personally think it's one of Mopar's most dreaded nightmares? - Jim

Message: LOL, good description. I don't know what I think about the PT cruisers, haven't paid too much attention to them really. About the only good thing I can say about them is I like the purple color they come in.

Message: I hate the dam thing. Lets just call it a glorified NEON wagon built in good ol Mexico.
I know I'm in the minority, but I hate trendy cars and trucks. I think its ugly.

Message: Hate to sound sexist, but the PT's a woman's car. Just like the Neon it's built on, yes, even an RT Neon. There are vehicles more suited for men and vehicles that seem fitting on women. Don't think so???...ever seen a guy in a Cabrio? That's what I thought. :-)
In all honesty, I think the PT Loser's an ok vehicle. Kind of mini-van/wagon. I think it's better than a suzuki or a focus. :-)
Take care...

Message: Yup I've seen guys in Cabrios. Usually those precious kind of just-so dressed dudes. I don't think the PT is a woman's car, I think it's for those people who like cute, kitchy stuff, and really think they are pushy the envelope for daring trendy, ha! Women like trucks, don't you know.

Message: I'll credit D/C with doing what pretty much all the other companies are petrified to do:
TAKE A CHANCE. C,mon. Viper. PT Cruiser. DAKOTA. Prowler.
Way ta go, DC.
The PT may not be a real performer, and I can see how it'd fit into the "cute/trendy" category, but it does have attributes like nothing else in it's class, the most obvious being an actual IDENTITY. Face it, there's no mistaking it from a Corolla/Prism/Civic/Escort/Accord/etc/etc....
Of course, I doubt I'd ever own a PT personally, but I wouldn't call it a "chick-car", either. Save that generalization for the VW New Beetle.

If DC put a decent powerplant in it, I'd buy one.
Personally, I like SAABs (building a racecar) -
and they were unique and advanced in their
day.

Message: Uh, the neon is a very capable platform. It sure smokes the likes of Civics and Corrolas. Just before the model changeover in 2000 you could pick up a very nice Neon R/T for $11,500 new. You could get a stripped down one for about $8500, and they run circles around the likes of a civic, let alone something pathetic like a corolla. A lot of SCCA championships were won with that platform so it seems like a good start for the PT if you ask me. Otherwise the PT is a lot better looking then any station wagon but I think it should have been bigger, but then it would have just looked like that mercedes SUV. The new Chrysler Pacifica should satisify those who want a 250 hp (maybe more) AWD wagon, but it really looks more like a traditional wagon then the PT does. But I bet you can't touch it for less then $30,000. The PT's are pretty fair now, Dave Smith motors has new PT's for under $16,000. That price compares pretty well to any other car, especially considering it has interesting style and more cargo capasity then a Durango. It really needs that turbo and better looking body colored bumpers before I'd seriously consider buying one.

Message: Hersbird, are you nuts? comparing a neon to a civic? have you ever owned a neon? I have owned 2. a 95 highline coupe, and a 98 loaded sedan both with the 3 spd auto. My brother in law had a 95 4dr 5spd. all these neons had the 132hp SOHC. My father in law currently has a 4dr with the 150hp DOHC motor in it. My wifes grandfathers Company in NJ used NEONs for loaner cars. ,all 12 of these having one major failure or another, mainly engine ,timing, or head jacket problems.
My first Neon caught on fire outside the mall. My second one blew a head gasket. My Bro-in-laws's had major tranny probs, and front end probs, the dealer wanted to replace the whole manual trans! 2000.00$!!, The neons in Jersey have been replaced with Gen 2 neons, and they are having the samehead gasket probs alog with front rotors going out with litle mileage.
I know all this seems a little hard to swallow, but It's the truth.
The neons that were used in the racing series were Gen1 cars. RT's with the DOHC 5spd. which they dont make anymore. Granted these were pretty quick cars, but were crude as hell. Motor/Trend said they vibrated worse than an old Singer sewing machine. The 3spd auto in the neon is based on a design close to 30 yrs old, and requires a service every 15.000miles, according to the owners manual service recommendations. Most of the major car rental companies have stopped using the cars due to headgasket probs.
The Neon is also one of the cars that depreciates in value the fastest. while the civic along with all Hondas is known for maintaining its strong re-sale value. just check the bluebook if you dont believe me.
To add insult to injury, all Neons are now built in Mexico with no improvement in build quality.
The now defunct strattus and Breeze have also suffered from the same headgasket probs. Along with numerous probs with the powere windows and electrical items. mainly fuel gages.
further more the NHTSA gave the neon a poor front impact rating and only fair side impact.
As far as perfomance goes, give me a civic with the V-TECH 5 spd and it'll run circles around a neon. especially since the DOHC motor has been dropped cause it was such an unreliable POS.
Im not sure but I think the Neon is going to be replaced soon.

Message: I loathe the PT "Loser". I bought both of my cars for the combination of power AND style. I would not buy a car ever, simply for the fact of style and that it is a new idea. Most 4 cylinder cars are small and purchased for economic factors. The PT is a heavier car than most Honda's etc, it should have no less than a 3.0L V6. It just goes to show that morons exist that will buy something that is different just to be different and stand out, even if it means sacrificing power. I had a guy in a BMW 540 try and pull around a big rig in front of me from an on ramp. If he can't do this in a fast V8, I would hate to see some Numb Nut in a PT attempt it. The medics would be scraping him and his "style" off of the road with a spatula. Please, offer up a real car next time.

Message: I'm not sure about anyone else but I thought that the PTs were going to be almost durango sized but then they came out neon sized and I was sooooo disappointed. They're probably not going to be around in 2005 unless DC does something very drastic. I live in a MOpar town and there are already like 2K of them here and they're as common as both the old Iroc camaros and redneck monte carlos combined. I personally hate them but I do like John Hennessey's version. It's just bad. Check out www.hennesseymotorsports.com it's got the info.

Message: H-Bird - the Neon redesign was 1999, not 2000 (I believe). Anyhow, I rented one from the local rental agency when I needed some wheels. All I can say about the Neon interior is -- well, "el cheapo." Also, the engine doesn't seem to have a sweet spot. The CD location couldn't be any dumber (at the bottom of the stack, in front of the gear shift). If I were to pick one in the class (less the Honda, although I do like a Honda (owned two Accords), I'd go with a Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V, a Jetta GLS (built like a bank vault!) or the Impreza 2.5RS.
Just for fun - here are some 1/4 mile stats:
Dodge Neon R/T - 16.1 @ 87
Mazda Protege MP3 16.5 @ 84
Nissan Sentra SE-R SPEC V 15.7 @ 90
Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS 16.1 @ 85
Jetta GLS 1.8T 15.7 @ 89
(that Nissan doesn't look too bad!!) - and pricewise/resale wise, not a bad buy either (Base Neon - $17,045 - Base Nissan - $17,500) = Jimbo
