Subject: Tire sizing question IP: Logged
Message: The 'standard' tire size on my 99 Dakota was 235/75-15, as I understand it. However, my Dakota had the optional 255/65 Eagle GS tires on it when I bought it.
When I put those numbers into my tire-sizing spreadsheet, I come up with a 3% difference in circumfrence:
235/75 = 90.72 inches
255/65 = 88.13 inches
My question is this: do y'all think my ECM 'knows' that my tires are the smaller diameter, and therefore takes that into account when it calculates speed and distance? Or is a 3% difference just considered within the allowable 'slop' range, and all Dakota computers are set to assume a tire diameter of 90.72 inches (making my current speedometer 3% slow)?
I'm asking because I am going to different size wheels/tires, and I want to know which diameter to try to match with my new wheels.
Thanks to all who respond,
John Bendiksen
