Message: The factory one is built into the radiator I belive. It uses the coolant to cool the trans fluid. The after-market one that you are looking at is probably an air only system. It pass's the fluid through what looks like a small radiator and the heat is exchanged by cooling fins. With this type of system surface area is what determins cooling ability. You can gain surface area by increaseing it size or by adding multiple core's. I prefere air only systems because they are safer for the transmission. If it fails you loose tranny fluid but you can usual detect it in time to save transmission. With a water/coolant based system if it fails coolant/water will be introduced to the transmission. Water will destroy the friction/clutch plates faster then anything else. The only way for you to tell that this has happened is to see it on the dipstick. By the time you see it on the dipstick it is too late.

Message: No dude, if you ordered the tow package, they come with an air-trans cooler. The one in the radiator is the standard setup....

Message: All autos have a built in cooler in the radiator, it cools the same way as the coolant gets cooled...air flow. There is an additional cooler located inbetween the a/c condenser and radiator with the tow pkg. The 10x14 sounds about right, but I'm just going by memory.

Message: The factory trans cooler in the HD service group is approx 5"H x 22"W. It is constructed pretty much the same way the radiator is. It has 10-12 tubes running the length of the cooler with fins between the tubes. There are different types of aftermarket trans coolers out there. They are usually rated by combined vehicle + trailer weight. I would think that one in the 10,000 lb to 12,000 lb range would be more than sufficient. Just make sure that it isn't too thick - there isn't a lot of room between the AC condenser and front bumper on the Dakota.

Message: So a 22 inch by 5 inch is probably equivalant to a 10 by 14 inch?? The one i'm looking at is also a six pass unit (six tubes).

Message: It is hard to compare the factory 5"x22" to an aftermarket 10"x14" due to the differences in designs. Without knowing how much heat each one is capable of dissapating, you can't tell. I would suspect that the 10"x14" would provide greater cooling than the 5"x22" and would be more than sufficient for anything a Dakota is likely to encounter.
