Message: I got my first dakota a couple of months ago. It's a '96 auto 4x4 V8 3.55. I was wondering what the deal with the tranny was. It seems to me that the tranny has 5 gears, but the sticker says it has a 4 speed. When on the highway, I cruise 70mph at 2000rpm. The tranny seems that it goes through 4 noticable gears, then drops to an even lower rpm after cruising speed it reached. Can anyone comment on this and are your rpm's this low also? Also, what rpm gets the best gas milage on this truck. Do we get better milage with the OD on or off?

Message: The transmission has two second gears and a lockup torque converter. When you're working up through the gears it uses the 1.66:1 gear and when going down it uses the 1.50:1 gear (iirc), and the lockup converter eliminates slip when the vehicle is at a light load. (ie: cruising)

Message: There was no dual second gear transmission in 1996. That was available in 2001.

Message: What you are seeing as a fifth gear is the torque converter locking up. It makes the transmission nearly as efficient as a manual.
As to best gas mileage, once you are in top gear and the converter is locked up, your best mileage will depend on your speed. It takes more gas to push your truck through the air at 75 than it does at 65. It's not so much rpm's as it is drag. Drag increases at a much greater rate than speed.
Twice the speed requires four times the power(approximately)
