Subject: Spare Tire Theft
IP: Logged

Message:
I just placed a factory order for a new Dak and noticed from the ones on the lot that the spare tire is fastened underneath the bed by a wingnut. It seem very easy for any bad person to simply un-screw the wingnut and make off with a nice wheel and tire. I live in an east coast city and have not really heard of these types of problems but it would be very easy for it to take place. Any theft prevention methods used in this area?
Thanks

I don't know where you've seen the "wingnut"
all new DAK's have "crank & pulley" using stainless cable fastened to a plate that goes
through hub hole in spare tire. Now for the anti-
theft for spare two options that I know of is
1.DC makes a crank rod that replaces the outer segment of present rod with one that uses a "key"
fit like lug nuts.or 2.a lock assembly that wraps
around crank rod then goes through lug hole in
spare tire and uses "keyed hasp style lock"
to lock wheel in position. The second type was
my preffered one as the lock assembly is inside
a covered "plastic style".unit that keeps it from
getting crud in it and the assembly has a grease
fitting into the tumbler assembly.

Thanks for the info. I must not have looked close enough to notice the correct assembly was not an actual wingnut. You wrote about 2 great security ideas. I am not familiar with your "DC" abbreviation from #1. What does it stand for? Also, where can you suggest I find the type of lock you seem to have utilitzed in #2... what is the brand name or manufacturer?

For the type #1 it is a chrysler dealer part
their part # is 82203352.if u goto www.4adodge.com goto build your Dakota click on accessories then goto to security then wheel locks.
As for #2 most auto parts dealers or truck parts
should have this type lock.

I bought a lock and cable at Home Depot for about $40 CDN. A 4 foot long KRYPTONITE cable and a all weather MASTER lock with all kinds of security feather on it, like a guard that makes it inpossimble to cut, and the all weather case with rubber pivot plug to keep dirt snow and crud out of the tumbler. The best one MASTER Lock makes. linked the cable around the frame and through the tire, no problems.

I hope that's not the same "outdoor" Master lock that I bought for my shed. The one with the little rubber "cover" for where you put the key in? If so, beware. The rubber flap holds the moisture in the lock and causes it to freeze up. So much for it being "weatherproof".

If you are talking about the one in the yellow case, then yes I think we are talking about the ssame thing. Don't have much problem up here in Vancounver B.C. Canada with freezing, the average winter temperature is around 7 C or I think 42-45 F. So not much chance of that, though there is a lot of rain, but we still get less than Seattle does. That's why they call it the wet coast.

Iknow a kid who lost his ubcab. So he decided to steal the entire wheel off of another mustang. I would worry about that more. Worlds really ugly when we have to worry about all that.

There was a tv special on last night,in Canada the 10th most stolen vehicle is a dodge 1500 4x4 and the 7th most stolen vehicle is a Dakota 4x4.The no. 1 most stolen was a tiberon (hyundi?go figure??).So if you are ever up in Canada dont leave your dak by itself to long.

Thanks to everyone for all the great security measures to use for the spare tire. There was also talk of tailgate theft. That also concerns me a great deal. I plan on researching this issue in more detail on the internet and post what I find. In the mean time I'll check out jcwhitney as mentioned in an earlier post. If anyone else has suggestions on tailgate security, I'd sure like to hear about it.

I checked out this link that was referenced above and it seem to be a good product. I may order one if they have it for an '01 Dak. Are these types of locks common and can they be found at any retail locations? Also, any additional ideas or types of locks others are using is welcome.

The type lock I mentioned before jcwhitney has
this lock also not shown on their website but it is
in their paper catalog. Most truck or auto parts
stores should have them (at least around me they
do). My local Dodge dealer has too. they will fit
2001 as well, spare tire mounting has not change.d
They recommend using the key type lock over the
rod replacement as the rod can still be defeated
but the lock type it is virtually impossible to
cut unless you carry around a blue key.

In Vancouver there has been a problem with spare tires being stolen. Two people I work with had there's stolen from a parking lot on the same day. I simply pulled mine out and locked it up in the box. Makes it easier to change a tire when it's raining anyways. I think it's the easiest solution.
