My understanding is that you can only get a NV-3500 in a Dakota. The 4500 is in the Ram. I think the Dakota and the 1500 Ram have the 3500, and the 3/4 ton (2500) and 1-ton (3500) with the 360 gas engine, have the 4500. Not positive, but I think so.

What year is your truck? Look on the metal plate that is fastened to your transmission. It will tell you what kind you have.

I have a 1998 4x4 V6 5 spd
I looked at the trans and didn't see any tag.
Could it be an Ax15?

I think one of the key features of the 4500 is a granny first gear. If first is useless in normal driving, that's probably not a 3500 :)

Biggest difference is 4500 has cast iron case vs. aluminum. I think my manual says that in 2000, the 4.7 and 3.9 got the 3500. 5.9 was only available with auto. 2.5 had 2500 I think. Here's a good link for these trannys:
