I'm a 16 year old new owner and I have a '98 Dakota V6. some what familiar with thermostat, but this problem seems a bit different. The heat will kick on after about 20 min. but it won't stay warm. the heat will fluctuate for about ten more min. and then stay warm. please help.

It almost sounds like a faulty thermostat. I would slap a new one in to see if that cures it.

Make sure you are not losing engine coolant either, that is what the heat comes from anyways, but it probably is the thermostat.
