Subject: Odd Starting problem... 88 3.9l IP: Logged
Message: This has been happening for a few weeks now. But i haven’t messed with it because i always manage to get it started, but im afraid it wont 1 of these days. When i turn the key it will turn over for a very short turn time, a split second or so and then stop, but if I keep trying and jiggling the ignition as i try, it will eventually turn over regularly and fire up. When it first happened I thought it was the battery and got a new, (it was pretty shot anyway) i did figure out the jiggling technique at the time;-) but it still does it even w/ the new one. I was thinking it’s probably a bad connection somewhere either in the switch itself or the starter maybe???. I couldn’t figure out how to get at the actual ignition switch and check it out because it is not on the steering column, there is a rod that attaches at the key and goes back under the dash and actually moves the switch. Any suggestion or pointers would be great, thanks a lot guys as always,

Message: If when it stops turing over and you try the starter again, you just hear a single click it is the contacts in the starter. If you can find someone to supply you with the contacts then they are not hard to change.

Message: agree with CW, it is the starter, not your ignition switch.

Message: I had the same problem with my 88 Dakota. It was the starter. Relays and contacts did not help me. I had to change the starter. I hope that you do have a relay or contact problem because it no simple task to change the starter. About 4 months before I had to change the driver side exhaust manifold, because of this I decided to remove the manifold to remove and replace the starter only because I knew the manifold would come off easy.
Good luck.
One other thing, the problem will only get worse and then it wont start at all, you could get stuck someplace like I did.
