Message: Would someone please be kind enough to explain why I got better gas mileage using 5w-20 dino than I do now using mobil 1 synthetic 10w-30? It's only 1mpg but I was just wondering. Thanks!

Message: Less weight? That's my guess. Oil with less weight means less effort for your motor to work. It should coincide with having a touch less protection for your motor's parts. You probably gained an unnoticeable amount of performance, a barely noticeable amount of gas mileage, and lost an unnoticeable amount of life in your truck. You'll probably gain one more mpg if you take that 10-footer off of your truck. :-)
Take care!

Message: It takes less force to pump through the engine and it causes less hydralic drag. If you put 0w oil in you would see another increase in miliage. Amsoil and Mobile one both make a 0w30 oil and both companys claim that the 0w30 is good stuff. Redline on the other hand recomends against 0w oils in the engine. I am a little old school in reguard to oil weights!!!!!!! I would never use a 5w20 in anything I own unless it was a survival situation and my crankcase was out of oil. Chevy tried the conventional 5w20 oil in the 70's and early 80's. It gave them a 1 mile per gallon increase and drasticly cut engine life.

Message: thanks for the info people. Sandman, I heard bad stuff about 5w20, which is why I switch to synthetic 10w30. I will compromise gas mileage to extent engine life.

Message: You should be using 5W-30 in your engine in the first place. You stated that you have the 4.7Ltr. You can use 0W-30 also but I would not reccomend using the 10W-30 under no conditions except those listed in the owneres manual. Yeah and taking off that 10 ft flag pole would give you aleast a 1 or so a gallon back(lots of drag). :-P

Message: The owners manual indicates that we can use either 5w20 or 10w30 in our 4.7L. They recommend 5w20 for better gas mileage, however, 10w30 can be used if you live in a part of the country that doesn't get too cold.

Message: 10w 30 synthetic should be fine in the cold also. I think the temp would have to go below 0 for it to get to thick.

Message: I have a 4.7 and the dealer just changed the oil. They put 10-30 in. I questioned them and they stated because I live in Canada (Vancouver Isl.) DC recommends putting 5-30 for all Canadian trucks because of the cold weather. We rarely get below 0 so they said 10-30 is fine.

Message: Maybe it was down hill from the Jiffy Lube, that's why you got 1mpg better.
Mobil1 must be crap, other wise why would Penske racing use it, or McLaren-Mercedes, or NASA etc...
You guys who think that dino is better; keep on using it, someone has to. Those who know better and like to keep thier trucks in good shape will continue to use synth.
Period.

Message: Dino oils, even though NOT as high in quality as synthetics, can protect for quite a long time. After working as a service advisor for more than 6 yeas at a Dodge dealership, I could give a several examples, but one sticks out like a sore thumb. A customer of ours had a 1995 Dodge RAM 3500 I-6 Cummins turbo diesel. He bought it used with 50,000 miles in late 1999. When he parked it in June of last year, he had over 500,000 miles on it and never ran anything other than 10W-30 bulk oil from our dealership. He was not interested in paying the higher price for the diesel engine oil (Shell Rotella). He never spent a nickel on internal engine reapirs excluding valve adjustments and leak repairs. I am not makimg an attempt to say the use of synthetic oils is a waste of money, because I actually believe they are better, but that does not mean dino oils are worthless.
