dudes and duddettes,
i was jsut wondering when do the banks start repoing vehicles? i've been a month behind a couple of times this year, but i've always caught up at the end of the following month. my buddy got his repoed after being 3 months late for about a year and he didn't catch up. the repo guys just came to his house and yanked his car in his garage. should i be making my payments on time all the time????

Why don't you call your bank and see if you're good to go or not. Just showing the intiative by calling them should be fine.

I agree- just calling them to say you care and don’t want to lose the truck will go a LONG way. They may log this in your history file and call you before the loan forfeits.
Each month you are going to be late, call them again to tell them.
If you make a promise to deliver on a specific date, keep it.
Banks don’t really want your truck & will cut you some slack, as long as there is some communication.
If you go three months with broken promises or no communication, they will come unannounced ...
look out for the repo man!

I question the statement about the repo man taking the vehicle from the garage. They aren't allow to break laws in order to repo. Breaking and entering in someones garage is not going to fly...

Definitely press charges on the Repo-Man who entered the garage. That's illegal!
I was a few months behind a few times (back in '98) due to financial reasons and as long as you talk to the bank, they'll work with you.

Technically, the day after your payment is late they can come and take your vehicle away, and it's perfectly legal. There's no law that says they must give you any grace period whatsoever.
Here's a helpful hint if you know you're going to be late with a payment - send in a partial payment on time, then the balance as soon as you can. As long as you post funds to your account on time, you gain some leeway on having them get pissed off at you.

I paid mine bi-weekly so the payment wasn't as high. With house mortgages as low as they are right now (5%) - I just renegotiated mine to include the truck, which paid off the truck loan. I was never late on my truck loan thanks to automated payment, but I have been late on my credit card - and paying what you can and making up the difference later helps get them off your back.
I knew a guy who dismantled his jeep into little pieces and left them all over the garage floor - he pointed them out to the repo guys saying "There it is - go ahead."

I don't think he implied they "broke into" a garage. The way these tow trucks are rigged now, the driver doesn't even have to get out to hook you up -- just back up behind you and hydraulics and modern technology pick it up and take it away. A very close relative of mine had his vehicle "repo'd" on Easter Sunday. Was at his parents house. Apparently, when a repo notice is issues, these guys "trawl" relatives homes, your house on Sunday, etc. They're in and out before you can see em.
Reiterating the advice ------ > CALL YOUR BANK/FINANCIAL INSTITUTION!!! Let them know you exist and plan to pay. They may even make arrangements to pay bi-weekly or some other way. As long as you communicate, I feel you'll be good to go. Not communicating - heck, they don't know you, and you're gonna get towed. Being re-possessed by the way, does not exclude you from your financial/insurance, etc. obligations either. You're still in hot water, less a vehicle. Best of luck my friend, and Mahalo to you -- Jim

Glad I'm not alone. The question "should i be making my payments on time all the time????" made me want to respond, "Do you mind if your employer pays you late?"
"Things" happen and late payments are a fact of life, but to ask that question makes me wonder if you're late because of financial problems or just because you want to see how far you can go and still drive.
But that's none of my business. I just had to get my $.02 in.

Why not sell the truck and pay off the loan, at least your credit will not show a repo(---) but rather a loan paid in full (+++). then go buy a KIA or something with much lower payments that you can afford until your finances are better. you will never be able to purchase another car with a repo showing on your credit but you will be able to buy another with a few late payments and a payoff. Just a friendly piece if advice if your payments are more than you can handle.

I guess I was assuming the garage had doors and were closed. Is this a carport or a closed garage? If it is a closed garage, they broke in. I think people are confusing this with breaking into the vehicle. That is not what I said. I was talking about breaking into the garage.
That is illegal.

Repo's vary-widely. If you bought a car from a 100.00 down take over payment small used car lot, they can take it at anytime, partial payments or not, thats the price for crappy credit. Make your payments on time all of the time to save yer credit. New vehicles are typically repo'd after 3 month's behind(this is based on being a repo theif for 2 years in Chicago.) Break in garage illegal, hmmm there are technicalities with everything. If the garage was locked ues it is illegal. Partially open where car can be seen, not illegal, trust me, I have repo'd many a car, that way. A side note, most tow guys I knew looked scary, but were the biggest pansies, hence the drop and rip style truck now, Backit up hit a lever, backup some more, and yank. Tie down the raod. I would repo on avg 12 cars a night @ $75./per car cash, nice job if you dont give a crap about yer life. Oh another legality, repomen CANNOT carry a concelled weapon ( gun) that is a definate nono

But again, circumstances forbid my being able to communicat. I was in a coma for over two weeks and very sick for quite some time afer. Can I be jailed for being behind in my pmts. I have just mailedone and a half pmt and that leaves me one and half behind, but will send it in two weeks later.

No one will put you in jail for being late on a payment, except maybe in Iraq or some other backwards country. The jails would be full if that happened. Now that you can communicate, call whoever owns the loan IMMEDIATELY and explain what's going on and what you intend to do. All the partial payments in the world won't cut you any brownie points if you don't communicate with those folks in some way.
Who told you you'd go to jail? That kind of intimidation from bill collectors is flat-out illgal.

I have had a 2 cars and a $80,000 Tractor repo + bankruptcy 1½ year ago and I just bought a 1999 durango, intrest rate is 17% but it can be done. I was advised to pay the car for 15 months and then pay off, will go on credit as a full 60 month loan paid in full after 15 months. Then off to buy a new durango with one of those sweet deals 0.9% ?

Sorry to hear that you have to give up the truck.
Your troubles aren't over after they take it away.
It will be sold, probably wholesaled, and the
difference between the pay-off balance and what they get for your truck is what you will still owe. You really should have a heart-to-heart with them ASAP.

Usually they'll allow two one month late payments per year. Stuff gets lost in the mail, bills get lost, it occasionally happens. And if you catch it the next month and pay it upto date, they're happy, they'll forgive. Make a habit of it and they'll start marking up your credit rating.

Don't think that when they repo it, that your bills and worries go away with the truck!! They will sell your truck for THOUSANDS !!!!!!!!!!!!! LESS then what you owe on the truck and you WILL be responsibile for the difference! Unless you plan on filing for bankruptcy I would do everything possible to avoid a repo. Try to sell it yourself, even if you sell it for less then what you owe, I can guarantee it will be more then the bank will sell it for. Just trying to help man, been there done that. I filed for bankruptcy so everything was washed clean. That was the best thing I could of ever done, cost about $200 for the lawyer and they took care of all of my debt. Great way to get back on your feet, I stoped paying ALL OF MY BILLS(credit cards, gas cards, electric bill, water bill, phone bill, etc... as soon as I filed the papers untill the bankruptcy was final, once it was final I started paying everything on time again.

Scotty, Sin City is correct. also you may need to take a look at how you are Budgeting your money. And always pay on time. This will keep your credit rating in good terms.If you can't make the full payment,make a partial like 1/2 and get the rest to them ASAP. & Good luck. It is the Interest$$ that accrues more than it should when you don't pay full payment so keep this in mind also.

HAAAA HAAAA HAAAA you did not make your payments on time and you pay 17% I made mine on time and I pay 0%on a $20,000 loan over 5 years you pay $40,000, What a fool. Once your rating goes to crap it ( it only takes a year to do so) it takes 25 or more years just to get near mine, then you have all that extra you paid out for bein stupid.
