Message: I was having the same problem up until a week ago and now the speedo won't start working until I hit about 40 mph. The service engine light came on and the guy told me that it was a vehicle speed sensor malfunction. I replaced the sensor and nothing changed. I know it has been a long time since you posted your message, did you get it fixed? If so, what was it?

Message: If you have a manual trans there is only one speed sensor on the rear axle that has probably gone bad. Are you getting other indications on your dash lights, like maybe your ABS system and others. The sensor is about 30.00 at the dealership. It is very easy to fix. Trucks with auto trans you may have a secound sensor that has gone bad, I have a 5 speed so I don't know where the trans sensor is. There are others on the sit that can tell you it's location.

Message: It's the rear ABS sensor. It serves as both the speed sensor for the speedometer/odometer and as the ABS sensor for the rear brakes.
It's actually a frequence generator (uses a magnetic pickup to pulse a fixed DC voltage applied across the sensor leads) that feeds into the CAB (Controller Anti-lock Brakes.) The CAB uses the it to detect rear wheel lock during braking (i.e. loss of pulses) and uses the actual frequence of the pulses (in conjunction with the axle ratio & tire Rotations Per Mile data) to calculate the speed/mileage data it sends to the PCM to drive the speedometer/odometer.
Because it performs double duty, the "sure" symptom the sensor's gone bad, in addition to the ABS & Brake trouble lights coming on of course) is the speedometer stops functioning below 20 mph. This happens because the system is setup to use the transmission's output speed sensor as a "back-up" speed/mileage sensor if the rear speed sensor isn't working properly and "that" sensor doesn't get to a high enough output level to be used this way until vehicle speed is above 20mph.

Message: I'll give that one a shot, I'm sure you're right because my ABS system does not work properly. Thanks a lot for your help.
Dak on Dubz, if you have an electronic odometer like mine, it won't work until the speedo starts registering (once you hit 20, 40, etc). I was kind of curious also and tried it and the mileage never went up when I was under 40. Maybe I won't get that part replaced after all...

Message: Black99 dakota,
Read the reply from Neil. My 99 with auto also started doing this late last year. I can't remember the order of the brake, abs, speedo not working but they all started within 1 to 2 days of each other. The speedo eventually quit working up to 45 mph or so. I would have fixed it myself if I would have found this site first. The dealer charged me in the area of $130 or so. Ouch.

Message: Concerning the ABS sensor in the rear wheel. I've had all of those symptoms (no speedo under 40; ABS light on; "brake" light on) but I also had a problem with the engine stalling or coming darn near close (400 rpm or so). When I replaced the sensor the stalling, and low rpm's went away.
Anyone ever heard of that?

Message: It could also be the tire size you have. I always used the recomended size for my truck.
I'm not having any problems with the speedometer as or yet but I'm seeing a lower idle speed on the techometer. About 400 RPMs. Would I need to reset the trottle body?

Message: I have had the same problems that yall have but my speedometer doesn't work at all and my service engine, abs, and brake light are all on. I have changed the output speed sensor in the front 2 twice thinking that would work because the first time i did it, it worked. I have a 99 dodge dakota automatic, is there a rear sensor i should look for and where is it? I know the abs runs my speedometer and i think it is my abs computer or something but i am not sure. I need some advice. Reading all of yalls advice helped some but i am still puzzled??????

Message: White Wolf
I have a 99 'Kota with the 5.2 & automatic & just as Neil noted way up on the stream, The rear sensor feeds the both the ABS & the Speedo below 20. The front sensor feeds both the speedo & ABS 20. Both of my sensor went out with in 3 weeks of each other. Each time I had similar symptoms to what you described. First I replaced the front sensor & everthing worked for a couple of weeks then one morning, nothing. Replacing the rear sensor (located on the pumpkin upper passenger side facing forward, look for the wire) put everthing right. Things have worked fine since then.
