Subject: whining sound????

I have a little whine, (a noise) when I first start the truck on a cold day, it's a 2002 4x4 CC auto 4.7L w/ 3.92's. it only has 288 miles on it. To me it almost sounds like the power steering pump. I checked the fluid and it was half way between add and cold. will not being all the way up to the cold mark (line) cause it to whine like this? Another question I have is, if I do have to add some any special brand or type of power steering fluid?

Thanks

Bring it to the dealer and have them top off the power steering, with only 288 miles I'm sure they will do it for free. Then see if the noise is still there.

My 2001 Quad Cab I bought February does that, too. I have 23,000 miles on it and nothing has failed.

Mine also has a click noise, like a clock ticking, somewhere in the left engine compartment near the battery and the electronics box. At first I thought it was a lifter or tappet noise until I traced it to the area of the left fender well.

Ahhhh Yesssss, the infamous whine.

Been there, done that!

I too had the whine, and subsequently, still do. My initail prognosis was that it was the power steering pump and took it to the dealer. they agreed that the pump was a little loud and replaced to under warrenty.

Problem was that the whine was still there. My mechanic (friend of a friend) said that they all sounded like that and he assumed it was the overhead valve configuration, but didn't know for sure. I then went to three different trucks on the lot with 4.7's and lo and behold... they all had the whine.

No problems to date!

My 2002 has the whine, too. I assumed it to be the electric fuel pump. I have not had a chance to study this vehicle yet, so I don't even know where the fuel pump is(my guess is in the tank). Sounds like it to me, though.

RE:CLICKING SOUND
I 2 HAVE NOTICED THIS AND LIKEWISE THOUGHT IT WAS EITHER THE FUEL INJECTORS OR LIFTERS. 2 MY DISMAY IT IS SOME SORT OF RELAY LOCATED IN THE DRIVERS SIDE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. U CAN FEEL THE RHYTHM BY PLACEING YOUR FINGER ON TOP OF IT. I DON'T THINK THIS IS ANY MAJOR CONCERN.

I've got that, isn't it from the compressor (on mine anyhow) located beside the alternator... it ticks at roughly eight second intervals.

hell yea I'm paranoid haha I've read a few horror stories with some peoples luck with these trucks but I wanted a v8 and the only way to get a rear wheel drive v8 that's good in the snow is to get a 4x4 truck (I'm talking american vehicles by the way). I love my truck and I don't want to be another statistic. Although working at the dealer couple years ago I've seen my fair share of Dakotas with 190-250,000 miles on them.

Thanks for the comforting info dakota297, I'll have to check it out

In my case, the whining noise is caused by the exhaust flowing past the catalytic converter. Sometimes the whine gets pretty bad, almost like its throbbing. Dealer recognizes, but no fix.
