Subject: do r/t's come in 5spd? IP: Logged
Message: I have a '97 slt 4x4 with A LOT of miles on it. I decided I want to get another dak. but I want to race it out. so R/T it is! but when I went to kelleybluebook.com to see prices, there was no choice in trannys, only auto. If you have any answers I'd like to hear.

Message: Yeah -- only automatics. I thought that was pretty weak when I learned it too. The auto trannies are weak -- I heard that the tranny is rated for 15 hp less than the truck produces STOCK.

Message: I've chirped 2nd gear in my R/T.
(obviously I'm not capable of roasting them as well as a stick, but I just had to toss in a couple pennies)

Message: The auto tranny is not weak in the R/T. It is basically the same 727 that Dodge has put behind everthing from old 318's to 426 Hemis, with an overdrive unit added. The manual (NV3500) on the other hand is pretty weak. It is only rated for 300 ft-lbs of input torque which is why you'll never see it behind the 360 or a HO 4.7. That and when you apply that 3.49 fist gear, to a 3.92 final gear, and 350 ft-lbs of torque on a 3500 launch that ends up being 4788 ft-lbs to the rear axle, something no Dakota axle can withstand if traction is obtained with slicks. The automatic's 2.45 first gear, lower launch rpm potential, and fluid coupling combine to keep the R/T running stong for countless hard launches. There is a manual available with the 360 in the full size Ram but it is the NV4500. It can handle 460 ft-lbs of input torque but has an almost unusable 5.61 first gear! You better have a Dana 60 or 70 rear end with that setup.

Message: I'll never forget growing up, a friend of mine had a Dodge Daytona - orange - big wing on the back. He had an automatic. That thing "chirped" second gear easily.
